Game freezing at opening titles

Hi

I've had a bug which has been under investigation for the last few months (caused by B&H), and its also causing my game to freeze on the opening titles.

It's freezing on a green screen and I have to put my laptop into sleep mode to get it to do anything (ctrl+alt+del / alt+F4 does nothing), when the laptop wakes up the game is there waiting for me as if nothing has happened. It's more frustrating than anything and ive tried all the normal fixes:

Repaired my game

Took my game to Factory Settings

Loaded with no mods

Removed the corrupted save - and then all of them just in case

Switched in-game overlay off in Origin

And nothing is working... does anyone have any ideas?

  • laurenlola22  That's great to hear.  You can try other similar refresh rates if you want: 59, 75, whatever is listed as supported would be fine to use.

You can also enable vertical sync in the game's graphics options, or in the Nvidia Control Panel.  For the latter, right-click the desktop, select the CP, choose Manage 3D Settings > Program settings, find TS4_x64 on the list, scroll down to vertical sync, and choose On or Adaptive.  If you switch to DirectX 9 mode in the future (you shouldn't have to, but just in case), you'd need to apply the settings to TS4_DX9_x64.

The "best" combination of settings is the one that works best for you, so feel free to experiment until you get what you want.

Ah-ha! I think you may have fixed it, although there does appear to be an annoying flickering in the middle of the screen on 60 Hz, the game is running fine on that.

I did test it before doing the change and it doesn't appear to matter what angle the screen is at, although if I have it plugged in I'll usually have it closed.

Thank you so much for your help!

  • laurenlola22  Try setting your laptop screen to run at 60 Hz rather than 144.  The option is under Windows Settings > System > Display > Advanced.

I would also like to know whether this happens if your laptop is mostly closed, but not so much that the screen turns off.  As in, does the angle of the screen matter at all?

If the answer is no, and changing the refresh rate doesn't help, let me know, and I'll try to get a second opinion on this.  It's definitely an odd issue.

Hi puzzlezaddict , right I've double & triple checked everything, repaired the game again, run it absolutely fine twice on the screen I'm currently using to post the dxdiag from (just to make sure i'm not going mad!), and it's definitely an issue when i'm running the game only from my laptop - i'm wondering if it's something to do with the new pop-up we get for the events etc...

  • laurenlola22  That's interesting.  Please post a new dxdiag with the laptop connected to a TV or monitor, one where you've confirmed the game works properly.

Hi puzzlezaddict I've finally tried both fixes and neither have worked unfortunately - i'm not sure if it makes any difference, but it seems to work okay if I plug it in to a TV/monitor, but the issue is still persisting when I try and play purely on my laptop alone...

  • laurenlola22  Thanks for the dxdiag.  The driver for your Nvidia GPU is somewhat old, so I'd suggest updating it.  You can use the newest release from Nvidia:

    https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/245673/

Run the installer as an admin: right-click the download and select "Run as administrator."  Restart the computer after installing and before trying to play.

If that alone doesn't help, try forcing the game to launch in windowed mode.  Open Options.ini, in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4, search for fullscreen , and set it to 0 (zero).
