Game is unplayable because of constant freezing

My game has been unplayable for a month now. I have two instances where it looked like the game was back to running as normal, but then the problem occurs again and I'm back to where I started.

The game loads up as normal, everything appears to be running fine, but as soon as I click anything it instantly freezes. This happens in every mode and every save file. It will run for about 10 seconds, then freeze, then repeat the process over and over again until it eventually completely crashes, or I have to manually ctrl-alt-dlt to exit the game.

I recently completely reset my computer to factory settings. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game several times. I've repaired the game. I've tried playing with a clean save file. I've cleared the cache.

This is a new, gaming computer. I have no other games installed except for the sims 4. There is plenty of space on both of my drives. My graphics card is up to date.

I've tried playing offline.

I have no mods or cc and haven't had any since any of these issues began.

I also tried uninstalling all of my packs and just running the sims 4 base game and still ran into the same issue with the lagging and freezing.

I do own Sims 3. I downloaded it and played it while logging the information. The game ran smoothly and was playable. Here is the report.

  • njmille  Sorry for the late-ish reply.  I wanted to get a second opinion on your issue in case I was missing anything obvious and/or critical.  The answer was probably not, but more testing may be useful.

Do you own any other reasonably-demanding games?  Even Sims 3 would be fine (but not 1 or 2), or some other game with a minimum requirement in the GTX 950/1050 range.  If you do, please play that for a while and log with hwinfo, then upload the log here.

If you don't own another such game, or you do and it runs fine, or you want to provide extra information, please download the free demo of 3DMark from Steam.  Run Time Spy a few times in a row, with hwinfo logging again, but nothing else running in the background.  Please upload the log, and also link the results of the first 3DMark test.  You don't need an account to view the results or send along the link.

I went and double checked the anti-virus was disabled and it was not.

I tested in a local admin window account. The first time I launched, while online, it was running perfectly. I was able to play for about twenty minutes with no freezing or lagging at all. I had my sim travel to a different lot and the lagging and freezing started again.

I closed out of the game and did the clean boot, offline, with anti-virus still disabled. It was lagging and freezing once again.

  • njmille  What antivirus do you use, and was it disabled when you tested this time around?

Please also test in a new admin Windows account.  Make it local, as in, don't link it to your Microsoft account or any email address.  You'll be able to launch Sims 4 without reinstalling anything, although I believe you will need to be online the first time you play in this account.  If that doesn't help, try the clean boot, offline, with your AV disabled.

I want to be extra thorough here because there was nothing concerning at all in your hwinfo log, and because if the clean boot helped once, that suggests that this is in fact about conflicting software, even if it's software that's hiding or otherwise being stubborn.

I tried the clean boot again and this time the game ran the same. Freezing every few seconds until it eventually crashes. I tried a second time, offline, and had the same problem. Both times were with new saves and new sims.

  • njmille  I unfortunately can't merge this new post with your old thread because the site doesn't support it.  So let's pick up more or less where we left off there.  Please try the clean boot again, online and then offline if necessary, as described in that thread:

Sims game freezes every few seconds | EA Forums - 11829990

Once again, please use a new save with new sims for testing, and only default EA-made lots, nothing from the Gallery or your own library.  We can try adding that content back later, once the game is running as it should.
