Lighting flickering in build mode

Hello,

It started about a week ago. I tried everything I could think of. My whole screen starts to flicker black at a particular zoom level. I have seen forum threads on that issue, but only for Macs and I am on Windows and can't edit my GraphicsRules.sgr file (If I edit it using Notepad it saves as a .txt file no matter what I do).

It only happens in build mode from what I've seen, in both Sims 3 and Sims 4 camera.

I took videos with the game's built-in recording tool, I had to convert them from .avi to .mp4 to be able to post them here but you can still see the flickering on both.

I can't play like this, as the flashing gives me instant headaches.

If anyone can help I would be so grateful.

I tested with mods disabled in the options, the glitch still happened....

  • TheKinaQueen  That is definitely strange.  There are certainly cc items that aren't fully compatible with DirectX 11 mode, if that's applicable.  You could of course test with the Mods folder removed and back in DX11 mode.  If that helps, I believe Sims4Studio has DX11 batch fixes for some categories of item.

I copied my options file from the folder that worked well to the other one, it didn't fix it. There is nothing in my config override folder.

HOWEVER i did some testing (aka open game, change a setting, close game, repeat) and switching to dx9 fixed it. I have no idea why tho since I have been on dx11 since December and it was fine until one day it wasn't??? I have no clue what the difference between 9 and 11 is, i assume 11 is more recent... oh well. I can play now, so I'll take it... hopefully eventually I can go back to dx11

  • 10kiiwii01  I've merged your post with another thread about this issue.  It's in PC tech for now, but that doesn't mean it's confirmed not to be a bug; it's just best to have everything about one problem in the same thread.

Anyway, please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

  • TheKinaQueen  There's nothing obviously wrong in your dxdiag, just some generic Sims 4 errors that could be almost anything.  Since the problem is only in one user folder though, the simple test would be to copy certain files over from the other user folder, or to compare pairs of files if you'd like to know exactly which setting is triggering the issue.

The first suspect would be Options.ini.  If that's not the problem, anything in ConfigOverride would be next.  You don't need to read through them manually—Notepad++ and similar apps can compare files line by line and highlight any differences.

Hi. I was finally able to sit at my computer and log in here today, tried to open Sims to do what you said, and the EA app decided to auto update my game (even though i had the setting off), I have internet issues at the moment and this will likely take a couple of hours, so I don't know when I will be able to open the game.

It is the only distance I see the flashing at, but there are other lighting issues in this save (such as weird shadows appearing on objects placed outside with nothing around them).

As for the DxDiag file, here it is.

The issue might indeed come from my settings, because I have two Sims 4 folders, and it only happens with one of them that I have noticed. Hopefully I can test some different settings later in the week.

  • TheKinaQueen  For the second video at least, it looks like the lighting of the grass is different zoomed in vs. zoomed out, and you've found the spot where the game can't decide how much light to apply.  That doesn't mean it isn't an issue, but is this the only viewing distance at which you see the flashing?  What View Distance are you using in the graphics settings, and does the problem go away at a different setting?

Please also provide a dxdiag, for reference.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.
