lost documents folder and my Sims data attempting to move it to a new Disk.

I already asked on another forum, but I was informed that here is a better place.

My C: drive physically cannot fit all of my mods and downloads. I have attempted to move my documents folder through properties but I lost the documents folder and all my data, minus a few random save files that I am uncertain how they made it though. All of the things in my folder are safe, I backed it all up before moving it, but now my documents folder lacks a special icon/may just be gone, and I cant figure out where to insert mods and files. No mods register, and every time I start a new world, upon making a sim and selecting a lot to play, the game removes my sim and boots me back to the world select menu.

  • SapphireDrag5  The Documents icon is different because it's not pointing to the Documents directory, just a folder labeled Documents.  Your computer would have several such folders by default, including the old one that was previously the directory—moving Documents doesn't delete this folder, it just tells Windows not to use it anymore.

So the first step here is to find the current location of your Documents directory.  Search in Windows for Command Prompt, open it, and enter this command:

reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders" /v "Personal"

This will return the location, and please list it.  You can write [username] instead of your actual username if you like, but leave the rest intact.

Then open the game and find the location of the user folder.  Here's how:

Let me know whether it's the same as the location of Documents, and if not, list this file path too.

Upon searching the command center, I got:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

    Personal REG_SZ Z:\

The game's location path for videos is :

    Z:\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Recorded Videos\

  • SapphireDrag5  Right, so your Documents directory is just Z:\ , rather than Z:\Documents.  Is the latter what you want to use?  If so, the easiest way to change it from here is to edit your computer's registry.  Here's the Microsoft guide for the process:

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-client/shell-experience/change-personal-folder-location-fails

Change only the Personal location, to Z:\Documents or wherever you choose, then restart your computer and check that the game is now using the new location.  You'll need to move your Sims 4 data to this folder for it to be read.
