Scientist Career Won’t Work Properly

I have been playing the scientist career from Get To Work and my Sim can’t fulfill his work assignment anymore.  He is being told to make a serum, but when I go to make a serum on the chemistry lab, all the choices are grayed out.  I made an angry serum but it disappeared.  My sim is being told to upgrade the freeze ray gun, but it’s disappeared from the Sims inventory. He can still use it to freeze people, but it can’t be taken out of the inventory to do an upgrade on it. It seems the bugs are getting worse with this one.  I don’t know how to handle it.  Since the big update to the game my family inventory doesn’t always work right.  Any ideas?  I tried to use the cheat code to get him a promotion but it isn’t working.
