Sims 4 flashes black and white then crashes

Good morning!

This is an issue I started facing a day or two ago, and, despite all attempts, it keeps happening.

When I start up the Sims 4, my screen goes white as if it's loading, but then it starts to flash black and white with a blue loading thing on my mouse and glitches around in size as if struggling to fit my screen (which is especially weird because it's set to the correct resolution for my computer 1920x1080). It then crashes with no acknowledgment of a crash.

Here are some of the things I've tried so far:

  • Reinstalling the Sims 4
  • Repairing the EA app through uninstalling on my computer app settings
  • Upgrading Graphics Drivers
  • Removing files: Sims 4 on Electronic Arts
  • Restarting my whole computer

(there might be more I've done, I'm just tired and can't remember)

I've tried opening it through curseforge, steam, EA, and no matter what I try to open it through it just doesn't work.

I really miss playing the sims and want to get this fixed as soon as possible, but I don't know what to do anymore. I'm unsure of what information/reports you guys need so please let me know how to get those if you can. I attached my dxdiag file because I've seen other people attaching that. I'm not good with computers, so I hope that it's the file thing you need.

  • Wombat_Justice  Thanks for the dxdiag.  Please update your computer's graphics driver, which is from 2021.  Use the newest driver Dell provides for your laptop:

    https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-us/product/g-series-15-5505-laptop/drivers

The list is a bit unwieldy, but the driver should be the sixth entry.  Run the installer as an admin: right-click the download and select "Run as administrator."  Restart afterwards and before trying to play.

As a side note, you can let this site check for driver updates and install anything you need.  But please manually install the graphics driver, first, and test the game, then look for other updates.

    Hi!

Thank you so much for the reply. Unfortunately, I'm still a bit confused.

Like I said in my initial report, I'm not very good with computers, but I don't think I have a Dell laptop. I have an HP laptop. I tried entering serial codes and such to the website provided, and I even tried downloading the service assistance app that the Dell website was telling me to do, but it wouldn't allow me to install it (error code 9505- Platform not supported).

I'm unsure of what to do since I don't know which driver to get, and I don't think my laptop supports Dell since it isn't a Dell laptop.

I usually use NVIDIA, if that helps, but I thought my driver for that is updated.

  • Wombat_Justice  I apologize for the late reply; I was away from the forums for a while.

The dxdiag you posted lists Dell as the manufacturer of your laptop:

    System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
                 System Model: G5 5505

Was this in fact your dxdiag, or did you download one from another source and accidentally upload it instead of your own?  If you're not sure, run a new one and upload that.

I genuinely have no idea how it ended up as that, but I am so sorry about that! Hopefully this one is the correct one this time because I really want to play the sims again. Thank you so much for your patience with me. 😭

  • Wombat_Justice  You're not the first to upload someone else's dxdiag by mistake.  I think some people have a look at another file and then grab that one instead of their own.

Anyway, your actual dxdiag lists a number of crashes of the graphics driver, or one of them.  That could easily take down Sims 4 with it.  So please do a clean uninstall and reinstall of the driver, as described here:

You can find the newest Nvidia driver here:

Hi! So sorry for taking so long to get back, life is hell.

Anyway, I tried out that whole process (it took me forever, and it was extremely tiring and anxiety-inducing, especially as someone who is autistic and an idiot with technology). It did nothing, and I'm too scared to try that process again in fear of completely destroying my computer or something.

I've continued to try different things in my free time. I don't really remember what, not that it matters though since nothing has worked. I managed to get it open at some point but it ended up freezing before I could even do anything and I had to force it shut (no, I don't remember how I got it to open in the first place, so no I unfortunately cannot do it again ToT)

Despite trying to update everything I can, deleting my mods entirely, removing the sims 4 file repeatedly to create new folders, trying to open it through the EA app, steam, and even curseforge, it still is not working. It simply flashes black and white and crashes. Occasionally, I'll get an "Initialization Error at Startup" with the code [135dec40:598068e4:00000078:37b26003]", but, despite way too much time on google, reddit, and on here looking at old posts, still can't figure anything out.

I'll try adding a new file thing, but I'm not really sure of how helpful it'll be. Again, sorry for the late update, and I'm even more sorry about my pure idiocy with technology.

  • Wombat_Justice  Don't worry about the late reply, it happens.

The initialization error is typically antivirus-related, but since you're not always seeing it, let's put that aside for now.  Instead, try one of these workarounds:

HP gaming laptops often show a white screen at startup, and there are a few workarounds for this particular issue:

None of these works for everyone, but something almost always does, so keep trying the workarounds until you find one that lets you play.  You can try them in any order.
