game crashes when placing stairs

My game crashed repeatedly after I tried placing stairs in another colour into existing stairs. First it was the stairs from lovestruck and then the same happend with stairs from other packs. I have no mods in my game.

Note from EA_Solaire:

Hello all,

If any of you are still encountering this on the latest game version (without mods), would you be willing to share your save file(s)?

If so, please send me a private message with a link to the file. Instructions can be found here: https://forums.ea.com/idea/the-sims-4-bug-reports-en/information-how-to-send-user-files-to-the-sims-4-team/5048472

Thanks!

  • Vanilla test results (MOO)

    • OP Generation Failed error
    • Staircase wouldn't replace and also there wasn't a crash
    • Staircase has turned into a void
    • I was able to sledgehammer and add a new staircase in the swatch that I wanted

I'm not sure if I could have successfully replaced the staircase with a sledgehammer while Mods were enabled, but this has fixed the immediate issue that I was facing.

For about a week and a half, I've had issues with my game whenever I try to add stairs to my builds. I can't expand them, delete them, or anything. As soon as the stairs are involved, I can't exit the game and the save screen spins endlessly. I can't use the arrows to go back before the stairs were added either. The game doesn't technically crash or freeze. I can continue to build, but since I can't save, it doesn't matter because as soon as I force the game to shut down, all the process is obviously gone.

I'm swedish and I get a small red error message that says "processgenerering misslyckad" which I can roughly translate to "process generation failed". I've searched for this error message in forums but can't find it, so I'm assuming it's translated to something else.

I do use mods and I've done everything to figure out if I'm dealing with broken mods. I've updated and done the 50/50 method, but there's nothing. I've looked at script call fails and all of that.

What's also odd is it only happens on save files from before issue started. While troubleshooting, I've created a new save file (with all the mods still there and active) and that one doesn't have this issue.

I don't know what to do or how to proceed. I want to be able to use stairs in my builds and I don't want to abandon the save files where the issue appears!

It does sound like the same issue! On the new test save, I had the same mods and cc's active and the error didn't occur. I've tested different stairs and the same thing happens no matter which ones I try.

I've looked over it even closer and it appears to be something going on at a specific lot on just 1 of my saves now.

I've talked to the creators of my mods and cc's and they've checked my logs and reports. There's nothing on their side and because I get the error message, it must be something with basegame build that doesn't want to work on that lot right now.

  • Hello, I am having the same issue. I have removed every mod except mccc (which I already know is not interfering with the stair replacement). I'm begging for a patch because I keep losing hours of build/design work :'(

  • Since updating to macOS 26.3 (Build 25D125), the Sims 4 crashes in Build Mode when placing stairs or lowering platforms.

    • Regular furniture placement works fine.
    • Crashes occur consistently, regardless of cache clearing, graphics settings, or game folder.
    • The issue started immediately after the macOS update.
    • Before the update, the game ran stable on Ultra settings, including stairs.

Crash Details (Example from Crash Reporter):

    • Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    • Exception Subtype: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000169014000
    • Termination Reason: Namespace SIGNAL, Code 11, Segmentation fault: 11
    • Triggered by Thread: 11
    • GPU: Apple M3 macOS Metal driver 0.0.0.0

    Already Attempted Solutions (all unsuccessful):

    • Cleared all caches
    • Repaired game via EA App
    • Reduced graphics from Ultra → Low
    • Tested windowed mode + V-Sync
    • Manually added Apple M3 to GraphicsCards.sgr and adjusted CPU/VRAM limits in GraphicsRules.sgr
