I wouldn't be surprised if this issue was caused by the recent performance optimizations... At least my newest save is a lot smaller in size that an older one.
I deliberately gave my Sim the expensive high quality camera so that the pictures wouldn't be as bad as the ones taken with their phone, but it seems I could have saved the simoleons.
