I've never had an issue with the photos in my game until today's update.
After I updated my game, I check on my main save file and all pictures I have on display are as I left it last night, before the update. I play with my family for a bit (the only household I have that has a significant amount of photos), create a backup using Save As, Save and Exit to the main menu and then load my save up again.
All my photos got wiped. This includes old photos taken with the in-game camera, photobooth pictures and ones given as Lovestruck date rewards, photos taken using Ravasheen's Full Control Camera mod, and images generated using their Ravasheen's Photographic Memory and Modern Family Portrait mods. This includes my main household, and a few other households with a couple pictures displayed. Photos that were on display, hanging on the wall or on a shelf are gone, while images kept in inventories (personal/household) seem to be fine (though these are mostly extra photobooth pictures, not ones taken with a camera).
I tried placing a random wall of photos from the gallery in my sim's backyard, created another backup save, and exited the game to come back to it and they seemed fine? Afterwards, I tried placing a few of the photobooth pictures from my sim's personal inventory onto the wall, as well as re-placing an old version of my sim's "Legacy Museum" (used mainly for photo storage). Loading back in, the gallery photos placed in the backyard blacked out, as well as the photobooth pictures recently placed on the wall. The photos in the museum still seem to be fine, and while I don't trust that they'll stay, I'll still go into my older saves to backup lots I remember having photos in them. Too bad photobooth pictures don't backup since I have a ton of those (but I can use modded selfie poses to replace them so they can actually save to my library).
I also noticed when comparing the file size for my save before and after creating a backup using Save As, that the size immediately got reduced from ~124,000 kb to ~103,000 kb (the change only being the wiped photos, the total file size is now mainly due to adding too many gallery sims to my save - but so far it hasn't been an issue in my game and I was planning on downsizing). This file reduction also happens when saving an existing save normally as well, and this happened in my other save file as well (~60,000 file size). I'm usually on Dx9, but I switched to Dx11 for a bit to see if anything was different (no difference).
intomybubble thank you so much for your in depth explanation of what you're going through. It sounds pretty much the exact same of what I'm dealing with. In my legacy save I've just far too many photos spread out across the worlds to dare go through the trouble of replacing every single one, especially with the lingering fear that they could go black again. It's very interesting how the size reading of the files have changed too after your new save-as. I don't doubt it's the missing photos. Im sorry you're having the same trouble!! I truly hope they patch it soon so we can go back to our previous saves.
