Sul Sul Simmers,

We’ve received questions from players with concerns about the For Rent Expansion Pack, and what we’ve been doing to tackle save file issues in The Sims 4

To address this community concern, we’re providing an update below on:

  1. For Rent issues we’re currently investigating
  2. Current issues with The Sims 4 that might impact saves
  3. How we prevent issues before release
  4. What to do if you’re experiencing serious issues with your game

Nothing is more important to us than the performance of our game and players’ enjoyment of it, and we’ve been investigating these issues thoroughly before providing an update. What we discovered is this is not a single bug, and given the complex variance in devices, setups, packs, and other factors, it’s required extended investigation. With this being shared, let’s dive in.

For Rent: Known Issues

We’ve fixed 29 For Rent issues that the community has reported, and as of August 26, we’re tracking 37 others across 2 different statuses.

  • 26 Issues Currently Being Investigated: This means we’re aware of the community report and it’s going through our internal processes. This can become a lengthy process that ranges from trying to replicate the bug to identifying the cause, working on a fix, testing the fix, or scheduling an update for the fix to come. Our team will share updates as the work continues.

  • 11 Issues Require More Info: This means we’re unable to make progress on this issue until we get more specific information from players who are experiencing it. Save files with the issue occurring is the most helpful for our teams, and you can learn more about how to report issues further down this post.

For Rent: Save File Issues

Of these 37, we’re currently aware of 2 issues commonly associated with save corruption that players are experiencing:

  • Lots/Houses disappear in saves featuring a large number of rental units, with 173 votes.
    • We’ve identified a partial fix for this issue and will provide an update once we have more information about the scale of the fix. We won’t mark this as fully resolved until we’re confident we’ve fixed the issue as described by players in this post.

  • White screen when loading the world, with 39 votes.
    • We’re tracking this across PlayStation 4 and looking for more reports.

If this is not your experience with For Rent, and you continue to face issues that specifically relate to this pack, we’d like to receive the info needed to investigate further. If you recognize an issue you're facing, please drop a comment or a vote - it really helps us prioritize what to tackle next. If your For Rent issue is not listed here, please start a new post here so we can investigate it.

The Sims 4 Save Issues

Let’s look at what issues are impacting save files on The Sims 4 more broadly.

A most severe issue would be if The Sims 4 game is completely unable to be opened and does not launch. We currently have zero confirmed reports of this; if any players are experiencing this, please leave a comment here so we can help troubleshoot.

The next type of serious issue is when a player is able to load the game, but unable to load their save. From what we’ve found in our investigations so far, we’re currently aware of 6 issues that players correlate with save corruption, and this is where we’re investing our focus to resolve.

It’s important to note that just because these issues are not unique to For Rent, they may have connections to For Rent that could be uncovered during investigation. You can expect us to share updates as we find them.

We’re committed to continue investigating these issues and work towards making progress, alongside shipping fixes for other top community concerns. We aim to deliver updates quickly, once we have new or helpful information, to keep players informed of our progress.

Keep reading to learn more about how our team works behind the scenes to identify and address player issues.

Investigating Game Issues

Before we release new content, we complete compliance tests across platforms and multiple levels of quality verification, including playtesting with The Sims team and a paid group of experienced Sims players from the community.

We’re unable to recreate every potential Sims scenario across the different combinations of packs, playstyles, and devices before launch. Once it’s been released, we utilize player feedback to understand what issues are being experienced, by how many people, and any patterns of what might be causing them to aid our resolution.

Another variable is if players use Mods and Custom Content (CC), as we’re unable to test against those in our pre-launch testing. Some mods come with permissions that modify save file structure, which can have unintended consequences out of our control. We have best practices for mod players here, which include disabling mods before any update, and we do our best to let modders know when to expect a base game update via our roadmaps. We also share our TDESC (Tuning Description) files via Discord to help with their updates, as that provides essential information for understanding and modifying data like field names and options.

Reporting Game Issues

If you’re experiencing something that’s impacting your ability to play the game that’s not on these lists, we want to hear about it. If you’re unable to get your The Sims 4 game to load or have a save file that you cannot open anymore, we want to hear from you and review that save file. We’ve created this new thread for any reports that the game is not functioning as expected, as we want to capture the full situation.

Fixing old issues and addressing new ones are both equally important to our team and to players.  While many players continue to play without interruption, we understand experiencing these issues is frustrating, and we remain committed to making progress against them. We’ll continue to update players via SimsDirect on X and Discord, and through our Laundry List and Patch Notes. Plus, we’ve seen players ask for information on how to back up save files and improve the overall game performance, which we’ll be sharing soon.

Lastly, we invite you to join our Discord community so we can hear from you directly, you can chat with our team and other Simmers, take part in surveys, and share your thoughts in our new feedback forum we’re launching August 27.

Thank you for finally addressing these concerns, years after we paid full price for For Rent and still have not been able to use it at all due to all the bugs. However, expecting users who have paid hundreds for packs at full price to be responsible for finding and reporting bugs is actually so offensive. You want to squeeze us for every penny, dragging out what were singular DLCs in previous games over multiple DLCs, each one costing a huge amount and WE are supposed to find the bugs for you? How about if you want us to work for you, you at least give us a discount. Make it clear you're releasing an untested DLC with no idea if it will even work as advertised.

I have not purchased Enchanted by Nature due to other players reports of how busted all the features are. And given the time it has taken for you to get around to looking at For Rent, it'll be what? 2 years at least, for you to look at fixing Enchanted by Nature? I had resigned myself to just not buying any more DLCs and relying on modders to make this game playable, but now with the most recent update I can't even use mods to do that. So now I am stuck with a game I paid an insane amount of money for, that is not even playable. Even when it does briefly work, I can't really get into it because I know it's just a matter of time before the next bug that destroys my saves. EA's money-grabbing antics have destroyed this game and at this point most of us are just giving up hoping for fixes that there is clearly not much interest in. As it's a sunk cost at this point I'd pay you pack prices just to fix the existing game, but I definitely won't be buying any more DLCs. I think it's clear there's no real care for us as your customers, no integrity in the development of this game whatsoever. You just try to smooth things over enough to convince people to buy the next pack, ignore the bugs it causes for years and think that getting random celebs to hype up the game is going to convince us to pay for half-assed content that doesn't even work as advertised.

Other than not being able to load into my household lot or any other lot. Since I purchased the For Rent pack, my tenants leasing agreement where it shows the number of days the tenant can occupy the unit never expires. Everytime I close out my game or leave off the rental lot the days reset to the beginning again causing my tenants to never leave so I cant move other tenants in or able to redecorate the lot. That is another issue I would appreciate EA Team can look into but the priority is also getting my save files fixed since the update. I do play with mods as well

  • I’m sorry, but this is tiring. As others have said, even beyond the save corruption issues, there are many more smaller issues that compound with each new patch and each new release. It has become tiring for so many of us to constantly play around bugs and performance issues, that in the end it might no longer be worth playing at all.

We appreciate that the team looking into these bugs are working as diligently as they are capable of. We need to address that the game’s new content release schedule has become unmanageable and expensive, which is causing more stress for players. So much so that more and more players are losing trust in the leadership’s direction of the game. Without meaningful action to back up your statements, rebuilding trust with the playerbase may become entirely impossible.

  • Thanks for addressing the issues, even if that's just a statement.

The main thing I want to say, as part of those people who take time to report bugs and do some testing, not having a vision on the full process and how issues are addressed is worrying. And sometimes, even if you try and find the root cause of an issue (like this one where it's a simple tuning error) and you see that after 6 months, this thing is not solved, that's infuriating.

There are so many small issues outside save corruptions that are quite annoying and ruin the immersion (like at the moment it's wrong hats on situation outfits, but every new patch seems to bring 30 more issues while 20 were solved), that taking a step back and investing ressources on getting things tested and solved would be great for players. I know that's not the most profitable solution, but I see more and more really invested players loosing their interest in the game (as I did), and in the long run, that's not a good thing.

I would rather have no new content in the game for months and having teams work on solving issues. I'm aware that's not the same teams working on all the aspects of a pack, but in the meanwhile, time could used to prepare the next packs better in terms of CAS or build/buy items (or even refresh and enrich some content like in the Spa Day refresh, adding simple beds where we only have a double, convert clothing and hair to other ages groups, etc...).

Yet again, as Mo said above, that's more an issue of upper level management and priorities, and the vision for the game.

  • Thank you for addressing this. It’s such a fun pack so it really sucks when it doesn’t work. For me the biggest issue has been the $0 rent bug. Would love to live in a world where this pack works properly.

Thanks for the information, good to know this is not forgotten.

I am glad when this gets fixed, I am holding off from buying new packs, till this issue is fixed. I am still not so happy about for rent, that I bought but can not play for fear of Save file corruption and this pack still gets sold. Like Laura Miele in an interview said, is it important that players don't have to start over, what with save file corruptions would be an issue.

I am looking forward to buying the business pack and the garage kit when this is fixed.

Thanks for this article. It was very informative and helpful.

My concern is, and I know this is probably out of developers' hands and probably more of a decision of upper level management, is that more content is still being released. Doesn't that just add more variables into the mix that you have to examine when you investigate issues? I know Sims 4 will never reach a point where 100% of issues are fixed, but isn't continuing to release DLC detrimental to the process of fixing problems?

Another question I have is more clarification about us playtesting. Given that it was mentioned that y'all are having a hard time finding players who have played without mods/cc, would a player be able to simply do a clean uninstall/reinstall of the game and playtest without adding mods/cc?

Also, since the article mentioned there was a paid group of testers, would they be able to do testing without mods/cc or are they already doing so? Given that it requires no mods/cc, I would imagine this would be easier to do for testers since the environment already likely has no mods/cc.

Again, thanks for the in-depth information. I really do hope that over time, these issues are resolved, because it does create a wariness to play the game because it may cause players to have to start over and lose so much they put into their saves.

    -Mo.
