Funny thing here is that I kind of agree with you in principle. Then I read "Apex is a movement + aim game, nothing else." And it made me realize that this isn't true at all. I think where I'm agreeing with you is in the sense that abilities shouldn't be so powerful that they act as a get-out-of-jail-free card. But should they tip the balance in an otherwise tight engagement? Yes, they should. That's why they exist. That's what makes this game Apex Legends instead of Call of Duty. Abilities shouldn't be the only variable in the game, but they are a part of the mix. And here's just one single rationale: movement cheats, especially on PC, are rampant. Aim cheats on almost any platform, but especially PC, are everywhere. But knowing when and how to use your abilities isn't something you can cheat. In my humble opinion the game should always be seeking to offer a counter to skills that are purely reflex-based and can be cheated. The player's ability to plan, strategize, understand options, and just basically THINK, needs to be rewarded as well as their ability to move or shoot. Abilities fit this category. That's what I like about this game. That's why I left arena shooters eight years ago and haven't looked back. When the only skill a game can test is reflexes/speed then the only winners will be cheaters and ritalin addicts.
