Apex Legends DX12 - DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG / 0x887A0006 on RX 6700 XT
Apex Legends DX12 - DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG / 0x887A0006 on RX 6700 XT
I am getting a consistent DX12 crash in Apex Legends with the following error:
Fatal Error - Engine Error [DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED] : 0x887A0006 - DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG The application's device failed due to badly formed commands sent by the application.
The crash occurs with:
r5apex_dx12.exe
My GPU is an AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT.
I have already tried the following:
- Clean Windows installation
- Multiple AMD driver versions, including:
- Current driver
- Driver from approximately 1 month ago
- Driver from approximately 1 year ago
- Driver from approximately 2 years ago
- DDU / clean driver installations
- Clearing shader caches
- Changing TDR settings
- Running Apex with completely empty launch options
- Removing old Apex files left from a previous Steam installation
- Running Apex through the EA App
- DX11 is no longer available as an alternative on my installation
The crash still occurs with a completely clean installation and no launch options.
I also checked Windows logs around the exact time of the crash.
There are no corresponding WHEA, DxgKrnl, LiveKernelEvent or Display errors, and Reliability Monitor does not show a hardware error.
Interestingly, at the exact same time as the Apex crash, Windows logs this:
Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-EventTracing Event ID: 2 Session "dc3a3596-71e1-45a3-b2ea-39ad5322fe51" failed to start with the following error: 0xC0000022
0xC0000022 is reported as an access-denied error.
At this point I am trying to determine whether this is:
- An Apex Legends DX12 rendering issue
- An AMD RX 6000/DX12 driver interaction
- An Easy Anti-Cheat / ETW issue
- Or an actual GPU stability problem
The fact that the same DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG 0x887A0006 occurs across multiple driver generations and after a clean Windows installation makes a normal driver installation issue unlikely.
Has anyone experienced the same 0x887A0006 DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG specifically on an RX 6700 XT with the current DX12 version of Apex?
Any information about what the dc3a3596-71e1-45a3-b2ea-39ad5322fe51 Kernel-EventTracing session belongs to would also be very useful.
What worked for me after spending an entire day trying pretty much everything I found online:
+staticprop_color_use_bindless 0 +staticprop_depth_use_bindless 0 +r_drawworld_depth_bindless 0 +rhi.dx12.EnableGPUUploadHeaps 0
This finally fixed the crashes for me. Let me know if it works.
