Game crashes with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED error

Hi, I recently upgraded my PC with the following specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • GPU: MSI RTX 5070Ti Gaming Trio OC
  • Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi
  • PSU: Deepcool PQ850M, 850W 80+ Gold
  • OS: Windows 10 22H2, Build 19045.6093 (fully updated)
  • GPU Driver: Latest NVIDIA driver 32.0.15.7688 (576.88)

I’m experiencing crashes with the following error:

commandline:    "F:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Apex Legends\r5apex_dx12.exe" -steam +fps_max unlimited -game R2
title:    Fatal Error - Engine Error
error:    [DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED] : 0x887A0005 - DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED The video card has been physically removed from the system, or a driver upgrade for the video card has occurred. The application should destroy and recreate the device.

Initially, the game crashed to the desktop without any error message. Switching to windowed mode allowed me to see this error.

My windows event viewer just displays information message:

File System Filter 'EasyAntiCheat_EOSSys' (Version 10.0, ‎2025‎-‎06‎-‎25T08:45:25.000000000Z) unloaded successfully.

The GPU logs in Device Manager show no critical errors during these crashes.

I’ve tried a ton of things:

  • Rolled back NVIDIA drivers to versions 572.47 and 576.28.
  • Verified GPU: no issues in other games, no artifacts or black screens. Ran tests like MemTest_Vulkan and FurMark (1 hour, 99% gpu load - no errors). Lowered power limit, memory, and core clocks using MSI Afterburner. Ensured the GPU is securely connected and power cables are properly seated, including trying different PSU slots.
  • Performed a clean install of Windows 10.
  • Modified the registry, setting TdrLevel to 0.
  • Tested RAM with MemTest86 and disabled EXPO profile.
  • Stress-tested CPU with OCCT, lowered voltages in BIOS, disabled PBO and integrated graphics.
  • Tried playing through both Steam and the EA client.

None of these steps resolved the issue. This error occur randomly after 1–4 hours of play. My game settings are maxed out at 3840x2160 resolution, 165 Hz, with Dynamic Super Resolution on a Full HD monitor. I tried playing at native 1920x1080, and crashes occur less frequently but still happen. I experienced similar crashes on my previous setup (RTX 3080, Ryzen 5 5600X), but I didn’t play often enough to investigate thoroughly.

Please HELP!

  • Thank you for your response.

    FAILING STORAGE

I currently have only one SSD in my system, so I can’t fully test the storage. However, I could run it on an HDD if that wouldn’t make things worse...

    Disabling the XBOX game overlay

I tried disabling all possible overlays - no difference

Recently, I experimented with modifying the Windows Registry to help with DirectX 12 issues. Based on the documentation at

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/display/tdr-registry-keys

I added a TdrLevel value of 0 and a TdrDelay value of 10, also disabled integrated cpu graphics in bios. After making these changes, capping my FPS to match my monitor’s refresh rate(165ghz), removing the +fps_max unlimited launch parameter, and setting the resolution to 4K DSR(on my full hd monitor), I was able to play for over 6 hours without the crash(80-99% load on gpu). However, when I set unlimited FPS getting 100% GPU load, the game crashes as usual. I'm also experimenting with different undervalting presets to get less power draw on my gpu, reducing clock speeds to a minimum in afterburner - it doesn't help. At this point, I don't know what else to try, so I might just play other games hoping my card is not faulty

  • I Had the EXACT same problem with both of my older GPUs. I ran Apex during S17 and S18 on my GTX 660 just fine, but after I switched to a PC with more RAM, I got the same error. I spent days going into every fix available and the most that I can tell you is that it has to do something with Apex somehow 'digitally unplugging' your GPU, if this is the same problem that is.

I tried both AMD and NVIDIA GPUs and I think it might have something to do with the motherboard and/or storage.
regardless, IDRK what the exact problem is, and you'll just have to try: compatibility mode, DPI settings, Disabling the XBOX game overlay, RGB apps etc.

Also, when I had this problem, it was on launch, and after the EXACT same error message, my game would crash. (the intro animation would just be a black screen with glitchy sfx). But if your error happens during gameplay, then try checking your storage. In the past this problem has been due to FAILING STORAGE, whether HDD or SSD.

    TL; DR

Try a new SSD/HDD, and if that doesn't work, repeat the steps you tried in your post for the new/different drive.

Best of luck, I hope you get it working (I never got mine working)
