Re: Antivirus programs reporting r5apex.exe as malware

Hi, I think I solved the issue (atleast for me)

Launch Avast and go to settings in the right corner and then exceptions. There you will have the option too add an exception. Copy and paste this file in the blank space, "C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Apex\R5Apex.exe" and add it as an "exception-file" and repair the game in Origin. Worked for me.

sorry for poop English

@bnYlicious As I said previously, I know I can add it to exceptions but question is why it is doing that... Something wrong with your reading ability?

what do you mean by copy and paste the empty bar you cant copy and paste a empty bar

  • @Thez0 To answer your question.. And as the EA Staff posted.. that these issues happen from time to time.. meaning that in the world of coding.... a single slip in coding could result in a issue like this can trigger anti-virus software making it think it is a virus or malware issue. Its one of the things that can happen when it comes to coding any kind of software.

EX: (And I am no software dev). Say the correct code in one part of the file is {(CODE)}...... The dev can easily have made a mistake and put {(CODE))...... And the file could still possible work correctly with no issue.. ... But then the Anti virus software might have scanned it and saw it being off... then flagged it as a possible virus or Malware,

What you are referring to will trigger a compilation error on compiled language, and an exception on interpreted language, which has nothing to do with what we are experiencing.

There is two ways to trigger an antivirus:

    - Behave like a malware. The heuristical analysis engine of the antivirus, scan running softwares and spy their behaviour, if something is suspicious, it is

    classified as a malware/virus.

    - Look like a kown virus, by having the same signature. Because some virus can be recognized by the footprint  (repeated patterns in the executable).

The last patch trigger AVG either because it behave like a malware, or because it has a virus signature. The worst case can be that Respawn have been hacked, and

a malware has been injected into the game. So being doubtful about it is totally justified.

    Hey all!

They are aware of the issue about the false positives.

Till they fix this issue, i'll leave here the steps how to add Apex as a Exception.

If this file is set in quarantine, flag it as false positive.

    Avast:

    1. Open the Avast user interface
    2. go to Settings
    3. Click on General
    4. Find the tab Exclusions
    5. Add: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Apex\r5apex.exe" here.
This should most of the time be the location Apex is installed.
    6. Press "Ok" and Repair Apex Legends.

    AVG:

    1. Open de AVG user interface
    2. Click  Menu and go to Settings.
    3. Locate yourself to General then click Exceptions.
    4. Now click Add Exception and paste here:
      "C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Apex\r5apex.exe"
    5. Now click Add Exception and now Repair Apex Legends.

    Hey @Arxenya

If your PC is not infected with any other viruses then it's safe to restore the file.

There is always a chance the a virus could have infected the Apex Launcher and i suggest repairing.

But i don't think that is the case here but just a false positive.

No other virus in my pc, I found the same problem that the other guys reported with the r5apex.exe file only after window 10 update, in my case it's about Avast. But here we are not talking about bug or simple game problems, malware and viruses are a big problem, it is right to be sure. So thanks for answering me, I will follow your guide to solve the problem and return to play.

Guys, I believe this only happen after the void patch. Only AVG & Avast is giving problem.

I don't see other players or other kind/type of antivirus reporting.

Here's another thing, AVG & Avast has merged together.

    https://blog.avast.com/avast-and-avg-become-one

So guys just make an exception on r5apex.

@Zeelmaekers flag it as false positive? what is positive about it? I can't play this game. And my antivirus is making alerts for first time in 2 years about some malvare. And what is guarantee that that fail is not
infected with some huge virus? All that data on my PC is not safe with it...

Yes i am not IT specialist. And that's why i trust antivirus programs and they do all safety job for me.
So you can guarantee that is safe for us?

    Hey @WondersLV

If you are using Avast or AVG then the chance your system is infected is small.
As you can read for my answer to Arxenya, if you didn't get before any notifications you'll be fine.

If you want to eliminate the risk of restoring a infected file.

Set a Exception and Repair the game, this will make sure you have a clean executable.

But if only AVG and Avast flagging this as a malicious file the chance is pretty small it will damage your system.

If the game was infected with a huge virus, i'm sure EA would have already took action.
But if you want to wait till they whitelist it again, that's also fine.

A lot of false positive's get patched really quick.

@ZeelmaekersCan you tell some strong arguments whay you are suggesting to trust it? not like one buddy said... because it's not trust worthy. So show pls in some ofiacal information that is safe meybe from avast or EA,that is safe to do it, i mean to Open the Avast user interface an manualy change it.
Just EA should garantie that is safe.

    Hiya!

We're currently working with Respawn and various antivirus developers on this. At this time we have no reason to believe anything malicious is going on and that this is a simple false positive caused by the update.

Feel free to @ us if you have any further questions 🙂

  • yeah thats not how code works when you mess up your parentheses the code doesnt compile and nothing works. that can be a huge pain in the a**.(looking at you scheme(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scheme_(programming_language) ))

far more likely that they used code which can be used for nefarious purposes as well, what they use it for might not be bad but it might still circumvent your computers security in an unintended way.
