Re: Community Crashing Troubleshooting Guide

This really helped me!! Try this first, guys. Especially AMD folk.

Cap your frame rate.
Go to origin->game library->right click on Apex ->Game properties->advanced->and put in Command line arguments: +fps_max 100. (You can try setting it lower too (90, 80, etc.)

This guide is a compilation of workaround fixes from what we've seen through various topics posted on our boards. It's a shortcut to steps that can help get you into the game right away and help save time searching through multiple pages to find answers. We understand this is frustrating and I want to let you all know this is currently being investigated by the Respawn team. They made a statement last week regarding PC stability here

We are seeing a lot of success with players capping their frame rate right now. It looks like rolling back your GPU drivers, capping frame rate like what @Onijai said above, and playing in borderless video mode are having the most positive results. We hope these workarounds help get you into the game with minimal performance issues while this is still being investigated.

If there are any new workaround fixes that you've came across that isn't yet posted up on the guide we highly encourage posting those here.

Me and everyone I know who experience crashes (which is all except one) have tried all 3 of those suggestions with supposedly the most success. It has not made any difference for any of us, and we all have different hardware setups.

That is to say that I have a hard time believing that any of these supposed fixes have ever worked for anyone. Maybe it reduces the frequency of the crashes, but I doubt it has removed them altogether.

I'm also curious why these crashes seem to occur with different frequency with each reboot. Sometimes I can play without a single crash all day, then I reboot and suddenly I crash every other game.

    @EA_Blueberry

"this is currently being investigated by the Respawn team"

Which crash is being investigated? I was told by another EA member on 21st Feb that the studio was looking into dxgi_ crashes but no thread for bad_module info because it is "so broad and generic". Picture attached. (the post removal was perfectly valid, I'm not arguing that, btw.)

I responded to that message immediately, asking whether they were interested in the bad_module_info crashes and received no response, so we must assume that this game will remain unplayable?

Can confirm I've tried every 'fix' listed here and beyond, and I've yet to stumble into an actual fix.

    @EA_Blueberry

Thank you for the prompt response. Can that thread then be pinned like the DXGI error thread so users know to post information there? Or perhaps start an official thread?

I've been combating this issue since launch and missed that post, and I've been actively looking. I wouldn't have known you were tracking that specific post.

    Thanks

I will now share with you the only way I stopped these crashes (I tried everything in the troubleshooting and them some, with no luck). I had to change my graphics card, flat out. I'm hoping this info will be helpful because this crashing is crazy. Please forward this info to the Respawn team.

    System info,

Windows 10 home premium (Various builds attempted, no change. Current working build 17763.316)

Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-V LK LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6gb/s ATX with latest bios revision

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K LGA 1155 (stock settings and overclocked had no effect)

    RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4x4gb) 240 pin DDR3 SDRAM 1600 (PC3 12800)

HDD/SSD: Tested various HDD's and SSD with no change, western digital blue 7200 rpm 1tb HDD and 250 GB SSD all crashed until the GPU change.

OFFENDING GPU THAT CAUSED CRASHES: Gigabyte AORUS rx 580 8gb (Tested all drivers from december to current 19.2.2) (Tested stock settings, overclocked, removed afterburner etc. No effect

GPU THAT IS NOW WORKING CRASH FREE: EVGA GTX 960 with driver package 417.35 at stock settings without precision software.

That's it. No more crashes AT ALL (I mean this, not just the placebos people are claiming worked and not returning to edit their posts when it inevitably crashed again, because IT DID crash again) since removing the rx 580 and installing the gtx 960. That card, coupled with my exact setup caused the notorious CTD without error constantly with no pattern whatsoever.

I tried every troubleshooting technique imaginable, in every way and during every moon phase etc. Nothing worked until I changed this hardware combination.

I have attached my dxdiags from the crashing system hardware combination (rx580) and the working system hardware combination (gtx 960)

Please get this to the team because people can't just grab another GPU like I did. This is a great game with an ugly problem plaguing it.

Nice knowing someone's looking into this.

Over time I've tried a lot of community workarounds. I was unable to find one that works.

I've attached the last error log file and current dx diagnostic, maybe it will help in reproducing.

Crash every game non stop, tried all kind of advises around web and nothing helps. Got clean install of Win 10 10.0.17763 build 17763 + origin + apex legends + Nvidia drivers from 417.35->419.17 Game just broken, some times you can play 2-3 games with no crash, if you got lucky. This is HUGE screwed up for developers team, if you made final product like that. Game is awesome and fun, but you cant play it.

    CPU: 3570K

    GPU: GTX 970

    RAM: 6 GB

    OS: Win10 Pro

  • fix the game already evry time im enyoing playing it crash!!! cmon already stop giving solutions... half day I need to investigate like sherlock holmes and than after 5 minutes of playing boom crash.... so GG devs and cursed ORIGIN/EA...

Tried this; capped frames at 60 FPS and yet still crashes. MAYBE it shouldn't be US fixing this stuff, and it should be the damn game developers doing their jobs and making sure it doesn't constantly crash instead of bringing out new content.

  • Just buy better pc, stop whining it's your problem, i play with my friends all the time without crash, not even single one LOL!

  • LOL people are still crashing even with 2k+ riggs. What an ignorant thing to say. Just because you're lucky enough to not crash and actually enjoy the game doesn't give you the right to be an * to those who can't. People have invested in cosmetics and want to support and play the game but haven't been able to do so for almost a month. You're trash. to the XIN guy above me ^

  • Well i dont know i was crashing and disconnecting before like hell , almost every game, in every lobby with friends , I have AMD FX6300,gtx960 Nvidia, and tryed to set fps in options i think i have around 70, set core to 4 in windows settings, but mainly in sound settings I turn off microphone. And now no disconnection no crashes, its weird I dont even want to play with my settings anymore, but its accutally working...Crazy after 2 weeks of constant crashes I play all day without any disconnection. Try it. I tried before everything, but these 3 things just fixed that issue for me. But still this game need some work on it....WINGMAN ITS JUST RIDDICULOUS. NOT EVEN IN CSGO U CANT PLAY JUST DEAGLE ALL GAME U GET * BY AK. Here u can just kill everyone with this gun. Lot of bugs in lobby still...

  • Hey Genius, that's the problem actually. RTX Cards.. the people that do have better PCs are crashing.

9700k with 2080ti and I crash every game. Will try capping FPS now but I shouldn't have to play at 85 fps.. this is ridiculous they need to fix their game.

  • What are u talking about ? Here are the players with pcs budged 2000 $ and its crashing, my friend bought pc 3 weeks ago for 1300€ and it started crashing today for him after yesterday update but that update helped me and my brother to crash 1 per day we are using amd hardware

  • Respawn still aren't interested in bad_module_info crashes? Any word on even just a pinned thread for data collection, like the DXGI one? I'm not expecting customer support to fix the crashes but not even a pinned thread? It's been a month. It's frankly concerning that every dev update on reddit acknowledging the crashes just points back to this thread, and never actually addresses the issue.

@Comanglia saw your name pop up and just wanted to say hi, I'm still using your TF2 FPS cfg to this day. Big thanks!

Hi! Thanks for using it, I actually am working on a bit of an update for my Team Fortress 2 FPS cfg. Also working on one for this game as well but it's an absolute nightmare trying to figure out what actually works and if they are / are not related to the crashes this game has.

While I do believe I mostly resolved my issue discord is still a bit of a problem. Having discord open and in voice was fine so long as I had it minimized. If I had it open I would crash shortly after. If I remembered to minimize after checking messages no crash. Both crashes gave bad_module_info errors. I was using hardware acceleration for discord so it may be related.

I may be completely off here but judging by the fact that for some people resolve the issue by either taking the side of their case off, maxing their fan speed on their gpu, lowering fps_max, lowering the texture streaming setting, increasing power performance to "prefer max performance" in nvidia control panel, disabling their 2nd monitor, closing discord or in my case minimizing discord and usually it's hardware accelerated by the gpu. It seems very likely that the crash is caused by mismanagement/lack of GPU resources or a sudden dip in GPU performance. Considering all of those options either improve cooling performance and thus decreases the chance a GPU will underclock itself from getting to hot, provides maximum power for the GPU to utilize or just using less GPU resources.

If my assumption is correct I'd be quite surprised considering with all low settings and a fps_max of 144 people should be CPU bound 100% of the time for anything roughly equal to a GTX1060 or perhaps lower. I know I'm CPU bound in CSGO and Team Fortress 2 even when using ridiculous settings like 16x AA, 16x Anistropic Filtering, with mat_picmip -1 at 1080p. I get that Apex is a larger game but just having 60 players and a massive map doesn't add nearly as much GPU strain as it does CPU.

    Editting this in

These are the steps I took to resolve the majority of my issues.

    1. Uninstall Origin, Uninstall Apex Legends
    2. reinstall Origin, reinstall Apex Legends
    3. disable origin overlay, and readd Apex Legends launch options -full -normal -dxlevel 95 -refresh [MaxMonitorHzHere] -novid -nojoy +exec [CFGfileIfYouHaveOne] +fps_max 144 are most of the launch options I have. Note use -normal instead of -high; -high can cause a bug where the menu to go to the main lobby screen just tells you to update origin. You might be able to get away with uncapped fps i.e. +fps_max 0, but I'm relatively certain most systems will have crashes with that setting atm.
    4. Allow the Easy Anticheat Service to restart
    5. set everything in Apex Legends to default
    6. set most settings to low/off. Set texture streaming to Low rather than disabled, having it set to disabled has thrown some errors at me about insufficient VRAM
    7. set binds to however you prefer them

For whatever reason simply "repairing" or "validating" game files didn't fix this even though what I ended up doing should effectively been the same thing just a bit cleaner.
