BATTLEFIELD 6 - You’ve got a Pilot Problem

I’ve been playing Battlefield since the very first game (yes, I’m that old). It’s always been my favorite FPS and one of the only multiplayer games I play actively. For me, it always crushed Call of Duty. There was nothing better than a good squad with clearly defined roles: medic, assault, engineer, recon.

Battlefield 2042 tried very hard to destroy that identity (that’s a separate rant), and now you’ve buried “class-locked weapons” in a mode that looks abandoned. Nobody wants to play it because it’s full of bots and presented as an afterthought. Meanwhile, too many players are running around as quasi–super soldiers: sniper outfit, C4, and an assault rifle all at once.

If you actually care about the integrity of Battlefield, you should have maintained discipline on class-locked weapons and roles. You’d see a resurgence if players were encouraged—if not forced—to play the way that made Battlefield great in the first place. But I digress.

Since 2042, you’ve had a pilot problem.

Battlefield is not a flight simulator where a handful of cheaters or hyper-sweaty pilots with macros and limitless Red Bull get to treat the map as a personal playground, farming 75 infantry and 10 tanks a match while the rest of us just try to find cover. That’s not what we signed up for.

Either:

  1. Some of these players are cheating, or
  2. The game design is so unbalanced that this level of dominance is “working as intended.”

Either way, it’s a problem.

Most players won’t call it out because they follow these “gods of the sky” on Twitch, and DICE won’t call it out because you rely on their content and brand promotion. But if you keep leaning on that tiny elite segment, you’re going to look up one day and wonder where the broader FPS audience went.

Here’s the answer in advance:

No one is going to spend the next generation of FPS gaming watching a super-sweat pilot macro-farm 100 bots a game. Real players will have moved on to more balanced, more intelligent, more respectful games—ones that remember Battlefield’s core: combined arms, team play, and roles that matter for everyone, not just the top 0.1%.

    To be clear I’ve been talking about helis. Jets are definitely far less impactful in gameplay and jet dominance is rarely a problem that I have seen. Whether jets are underpowered however, I don’t know. I just know I’m watching every single match be dominated by 60, 70, 80 kill helicopter pilot hackers.  I’ve played against helicopter pilots who have headshot me on spawn, one shot, 500 meters while moving.

    "Game is already dead" is being dramatic.

    There were over 100k concurrent players on Sunday...during the NFL playoffs......and that's just counting the Steam owners. Probably double that on EA app alone.

    High kill pilots aren't exclusive to just BF6. I easily remember pilots being the highest fraggers in BF4 ocean maps.

    Right so if helis were actually killable at a similar rate to tanks, others would be able to use them and it would allow others to get better. 

  • My complaint with air vehicles is that I never had a chance to get good. When I tried, I had to fight to get into one for 10 minutes, didn't have any upgrades unlocked, and got shot down immediately. I have since gotten a lot better by practicing in Portal custom servers, but still have no unlocks. So, I think that is the end of the flying road for me. No unlocks and no way to get them in a game that has advanced without me.

    Why do they put the good stuff on the other side of a kill wall, when you can't get kills without it in order to obtain it?

    I bet. At this point they feel entitled to fly freely for 20 minutes. Getting killed at all upsets them. Helis should be destroyed as often as tanks. That would also allow, like tanks, multiple people to actually use the helis.  

    I agree.  The fact that not only can’t they be killed, but the helis then sit there and farm your spawn, is insane. 

  • I just saw another post a pilot saying that AA was too powerfull..

    Mortar has a no launch or use in spawn areas i in base spawns you should not be able to kill or be killed that goes for any vehicle camping in base spawn

    Nothing worse than spawning and then dying to an air vehicle.

    Helicopter pilots are treated like sacred cows. I’ve been a pretty good tank driver for years, but I don’t go 60–0. If I did, that would mean there’s a problem with the game, not that I’m a god. Right now Battlefield seems fine with a tank getting killed by four different kinds of mines as soon as it hits an objective, but helicopters can be functionally invincible: pop flares, fly below 20 meters, hide behind mountains/buildings (especially on Liberation Peak), then rinse and repeat.

    Yes, there have always been elite pilots, but it wasn’t until 2042 that it turned into “death from above” for the entire lobby, with everyone else running for their lives the whole match. On top of that there’s rampant cheating and use of automated tools, custom hardware, and macros. Everyone knows this. Some players are genuinely very good, sure, but “untouchable”? Not a chance. They aren’t superhuman. And if a handful really are that dominant, fix matchmaking and let them play mostly against each other. Stop letting them ruin it for everyone else.

    And yes, I agree: fix the takeoff issue, flares, the 20-meter limit, and the useless AA equipment. That will help—but it still won’t solve the core problem, which is that right now the game is tuned around making heli aces feel powerful instead of making the match fun for the other 62 players.

    Fix Maps, plane takeoff and anti-air first.

    Then let us have a talk about pilots.

    The skilled Pilot problem in bf6 is the same as was in every other title before. Once someone gets so skilled that no one can touch him it is over. 

    BUT: 

    1. There is a very big skillgap to become one of the untouchables. And there a a lot of wannabe untouchables.

    2. Currently bf6 with its "immersion :D it is build to takeoff from a runway. 

    The wannabe untouchable Pilots are **bleep** the runways. No chance to takeoff. 

    Who ever gets to kill the enemy first keeps dominating the enemy plane. 

    Now the voices are getting louder to make infantry and tanks stronger to deal with the planes and the helicopters ...

    What in my opinion is the wrong direction. 

    They (DICE) should instead keep the enemy outside of both bases and let the enemy pilot spawn so they can engage after take off.  

    The fact that the enemy can a) Kill enemys in enemybase on Firestorm from the hill from their protected spawn area and b) they can do the same from E.

    3. Anti Air from Vehicle and Infantry are still broken. I have fired about 200 stingers and made 25 kills. I only shoot when flares are popped and helicopter and plane are in line of sight. Flares are holding longer then expected. The "Below Radar" is a Joke and broken on the most vital maps.

    The game is already dead. All empty lobbies filled with bots. You catered to the flight sim people and CoD crowd and you destroyed the franchise. 60-0 helicopter pilots. Yeah, that’s fair.
