I like using the medic class, but the effectiveness of using smoke to obstruct vision varies greatly depending on whether you want to revive someone, block their movement, or capture a flag. Also, having one or two medics in your squad makes you very powerful because they can revive you no matter how many times you fall, just like zombies.
