Views on the Overly Complex Weapon XP System & Solutions to Boost Match Dynamics

Issue:

A lot of players in Asia really hate how convoluted the Weapon XP system is. They’re dead set on getting maxed-out attachments before even joining regular matches, so tons of people end up grinding for attachments in Portal—making that mode totally overcrowded. But here’s the problem: players without attachments (or those who don’t care much about them) hardly stand a chance in gunfights against others with fully kitted weapons. Worse yet, the only way to unlock weapon attachments in actual matches is by getting kills.

It turns into a vicious cycle: you can’t win gunfights without attachments, so you can’t earn XP to unlock attachments… and then you still can’t win. As a result, new players get totally discouraged and quit early on. Before you know it, only the top-tier players are left, stuck in high-stakes matches that boil down to nothing but constant killing. Eventually, the player base just keeps shrinking.

solution:

Here’s a solution: We could let weapon XP be earned through various in-match actions. For example, XP from capturing points, defending points, reviving teammates, getting assists, suppressing fire, destroying vehicles, and repairing vehicles—allocate 40% of the XP from these actions to the player’s equipped weapon.

This way, grinding for weapon attachments won’t be so tough, and players will have more to do in matches instead of just focusing on getting kills. Even if you’re getting outplayed by skilled players, you can switch to other tasks. It’ll liven up the game, and new/casual players will also feel a sense of accomplishment. Over time, players will naturally stick around, unlocking weapon attachments will become easier, and the Portal mode will get back on track too.

  • The solution is to stop bots giving progression so everyone earns the unlocks fairly in online multiplayer.

Just doing this still won’t solve the problem of new and casual players being steamrolled by those with fully kitted weapons—they’ll still have a terrible experience.
