Infinite loading/splash screen after launch (Windows 11, Steam)

I recently started playing SWTOR on my laptop again and for the past week I've had no issues running it with high graphics settings. Yesterday, however, after I successfully launched the game via the launcher, I got stuck on the Desperate Defiance loading screen. I could hear ambient sounds and the little blue wheel kept spinning, but it seemed like I couldn't get to the servers for some reason so I was stuck on an infinite loading screen. Last night I finally managed to log on after disabling some of my Windows Defender settings and played for a few ours with no issue, but whenever I try logging on today I'm met with the same problem, so I haven't been able to log in again. I assume this is related to Windows Defender since I got the game to work once after turning some protections off, but even if that's the case I'm not quite sure which settings to change as I have both the swtor.exe and launcher.exe as exceptions (I'm unfortunately pretty ignorant when it comes to this kind of thing 😅)

  • Update no. 2: Got the same connection issue yesterday even with the DNS server changes lmao. I got a VPN as suggested in a different post and now have no issues with the initial loading screen regardless of the DNS settings. I think it's clear now that this was caused by my wifi/internet provider rather than something on the game's end.

    I'd first try out the things listed in the guide proxos provided before changing the DNS settings. I only started looking into DNS settings once I'd gone through those steps and determined it wasn't something like my graphics card or firewall causing the problem (s those two things seem to be the more common culprits with this particular issue).

    Ultimately I downloaded ProtonVPN and turn that on when I play since it was apparent my internet provider had been the cause of my problem

    its rare for a dns issue to be the cause for loading screen, have seen it with the login server over the years, its certainly interesting though and thanks for detailing it here

    Update: I was just now able to log on after changing my IPv4 and IPv6 to the Google DNS servers. Guess time will tell if this is a temporary fix or not lol

    Thank you for your quick reply. I use my Nvidia driver for SWTOR so it hadn't occurred to me double-check the Intel one, so I've now updated it. After running sfc, it reads "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations." I also ran dism and then sfc again, and it still says the same thing.

    Unfortunately, I'm still getting the infinite loading screen and am unable to get into the game. Not sure if this is helpful, but when I check my logs, they say

    WARNING HandleLaunchFailure with error type 1005 : LOGIN_ERROR_FAILED_CONNECT_TO_GAME_SERVER [Connect.firestorm.client.OmegaClientApp](omegaclientapp.cpp:OmegaClientApp::HandleLaunchFailure:459)

  • you need to update the video driver, try using the intel detect utility

    your driver is from 2024

    Ensure the game is set to use the performance card as the intel card has been known to halt on the launch screen with older drivers

    edit: the dxdiag is also showing component store issues, open a command prompt as administartor and type sfc /scannow

    Problem signature:
    P1: 10.0.26100.4484:1
    P2: wcp\componentstore\scavenge.cpp
