P2P. High prices make the game many times more friendly for F2P players than low prices would.
Data?
I can tell from my own perspective that if prices were 1/10 of what it is now, I would move from F2P back to P2P. But paying ~$300 for lvl1, g1, no mods, no omegas, no zetas character or almost $20 for a single stun gun is worth visiting a specialist, because it is a mental condition. As described by OP, these are not micro transactions.

It's also the economic model that this type of game works off of based on their metrics that it will make them the most money. They aren't going to suddenly change and make things cost a few cents.
This I agree with. Sucking as much money as possible from addicted people is their main goal. Although the game could grow with only fraction of the income because majority of money we spent don't go back to the game but to EA's shareholders. The game used to make some 50M+ per quarter. Single such quarter should be enough to support CG for 2-3 years.

There have to be gates in the game. They can gate a few pieces of gear and make everything important require those pieces, they can heavily gate a ton of different pieces of gear, or they can regularly add new pieces of gear that are even more gated than the old ones (see Kyrotechs). Regardless of which they do, progression will be gated because that's how a collection game has to work to be sustainable. How it's gated doesn't actually matter that much. Your complaint about being tired of farming the same node all the time is silly - you're just hitting sim and moving the slider, what difference does it make if you do that on the same node over and over or different nodes? It's not gameplay either way, it's just farming.
It is about resource management, so yes, there has to be "gates". Is the current system good? I'm not sure. It wasn't always like this. I'm just gearing Geonosians and it looks like half of them don't need a single Stun Gun to get to G11. Didn't have such a fun gearing a team for ages. Very different to new characters where you may need stun gun on almost every gear tier since 9 and extremes like 3 stun guns and 3 golden balls to get to G12.
The main problem imo is that old gates are more heavily utilized with new characters (needing more of these resources) and new gates are being added at the same time (golden balls for G12, kyrotech for G13).
