Locked content behind tedious requirements is basically the new way to get some easy cash i guess. You can only blame players who support such mechanics. ;)
This ^. It's a great strategy to put off newer players. It's makes whales and older players happy....at least for a period of time. Newer players are going to see these walls and just not even bother.
Actually, new players have an advantage as they are earlier along and it gives them clear farming goals. The smart ones will start farming to the TB (if it turns out that the characters/gear available as a result are the usual "OP newness"). If anything, it might put them off for a different reason - when there is a relatively clear path of "do this, then this, then farm this, etc." the game could get fairly boring.
It's, ironically, high-level veteran players that realized there wasn't a good reason to farm certain characters, as they perform poorly in-game, that are at a disadvantage.
