My first into relics was Darth Vader. It's been so long that I cannot remember for sure the path I took...I want to say my first R7 was Grevious for Padme's event (or I may have bumped him up afterwards)...or maybe it was Padme for GAS's event. Can't really remember for sure.

I remember my first R8 was Darth Revan, because I was unwise of the way of our Sith Lords (CG) and did not know that relics would be a pre-req for other things. Otherwise, I might have been more judicious with my relic mats.
