We used to do this during Marvel's Avengers Alliance on Facebook, when during pvp seasons, you could unlock new heroes by getting enough lockboxes:
Set an insanely weak defense. This will allow those on offense to generally win, and earn a decently high rank. Those who want top tier rankings can still get there via hardcore, nonstop fights with beastly teams, but this tactic lets even those who are only average still end up with a lot of shards, if not the guaranteed unlock of Jyn.
The amount of players that unlock Jyn will remain the same, regardless of how many points everyone can acquire. So setting a weak defence only makes the chance you're getting Jyn smaller, since more players will be able to acquire alot of points.

While I don't agree this would work, it doesn't really make sense that ppl set the toughest D possible as they actually gain nothing from defense wins. If we gained the points that others lost it would make sense to set tough D. Rank is based on points, unlike arena D.
It doesn't make sense to not set your strongest defense possible.
It makes no difference honestly.
The difference is that it has
no downside to set your strongest defence possible, but setting a weak defence does. So why would you set a weak def team, even if the downside is very, very small?
It may not even be noticable if a few players set a weak defence, most certainly not noticable if those players aren't serious contenders for the top200. But when alot of players are going to set weak defences (as some forum members are suggesting) the tournaments will inevitably become more time consuming. Furthermore, players who don't stand a chance normally, because their A-team isn't able to beat full meta teams, are able to compete for the top ranks, making it unnecessarily harder for players who actually can actually beat those full meta teams.
So you're simply wrong by saying that it doesn't make a difference. But I agree that it's very possible to rank high with a weak defence team, probably without even noticing the negative effects of said weak def team, but that doesn't mean it doesn't make a difference.
