Good luck. I'm 20 months into trying to get CG to look at this issue. They've never responded and it has never been brought up in a road ahead. It has been ~1,000 days since they moved crystal rewards away from squad arena and into GAC, yet fleet arena still sucks. The shard system is outdated, it's imbalanced, and it's easy to game to the detriment of other players. CG needs to do away with it.
I totally see what you're saying, I think the issue lies with the free crystals being tied to both of the arena modes at all. It's very discouraging, shoulda spent my hyperlight bundle on a fresh account.

I'm 11M on the worst fleet shard in the game (orders of magnitude more active than other shards with an extremely toxic mafia) and I struggle to get top 20 even with the meta fleet because ~30 people work together to lock me out of rewards.
And the solution proposed by other members of the community is for me to restart or quit playing. lmfao.There were many other solutions proposed by members of the community - you’ve just chosen to ignore them, and now pretend they weren’t suggested in the first place. Never mind the fact that your complaint is not relevant to the OP’s complaint.
Okay bud. OP complains about the shard system for reasons related to my issues with it and I agree with them, offering my take and suggestions from someone who was in their position a few years ago and has worked tirelessly to come back from being behind.
Also, none of the proposed solutions from the old forums are even remotely viable.
This is the big decision for returning players - pick up from where you left off - including any friends you may have made in your shard - or start fresh against others with a similar starting point.
wven during the first year of this game some were restarting to get a more favourable shard.
at least it’s just the fleet arena where this is a big problem now.Getting behind shard mates in arenas and getting behind on marquees and the bonus shards you can get if you are playing the game when they launch - a couple things that handicap players who have taken a break. At the same time this is a game that rewards people who log in multiple times each day.
They aren't "free" crystals they are earned, for many over a good few months, perhaps even a year or so.
So lets get this straight.....you expect one of the most profitable and played mobile games to change the way all other players receive rewards (with scant regard that they have earned them) because entitled "I'm on a business course" you left the game 8 years ago and weren't clever enough to spend your hyperdrive bundle on a new account?
