Plus, any good player will customize their defense to any glaring weaknesses on the opposing roster. I decide my defensive teams after looking at my opponent's roster in detail, figuring out which teams will cause them the most problems, and I also figure out if I can spare any of my top offensive choices.
I know what you both mean, but to some degree I would say this in favour of the alternative too. It is very rare for me to have a surprise in my opponents defense in GA, simply because after playing a few you begin to see which teams more people put on defense and what goes on offense. You can usually guess at least some of the teams you will end up facing based on the counters you don't have and generally the only surprise is when someone goes very heavily defensive or offensive, in which case you can win because they lose too many points attacking or being attacked. Being able to set unexpected teams is key, and what might qualify as unexpected can vary match to match. Ultimately it will be nice when they change it, one less thing to think about at least, but equally it will be interesting while it lasts and I look forward to the novelty for the time being.
