Can't login & Origin required after reinstall

I've been trying to get Sims 3 to work for the past two days now and I have no idea what else I should do.

I got myself a new PC (Windows 11) in November and installed Sims 3 among other apps and games back then but I've never tried it. This week I wanted to check something out in my old game save so I started the game. Everything seemed to be working fine except that a lot of stuff wasn't working because EPs were missing. I realised that the EA app said I only owned 2 EPs even though I had 8 installed. I thought maybe something went wrong and reinstalled it. I installed the missing EPs from my CDs while I did the rest from the EA app. Because installing from the CDs took A LOT of time I googled a bit and found out that clearing the cache from the EA app can sometimes help as well so I did that and it found all my EPs. So I reinstalled everything again from the EA app. All the stuff from my old game save was ok again as well.

But now I have other problems. Whenever I click on the shortcut for the Sims 3 I get an Error that Origin is required to play the game. If I start the game from the EA app I can start it but I can't login anymore. I don't get a "wrong email/password" message or anything like that, I just get redirected to login again. And I was able to login before I reinstalled everything. I already checked if I have special characters in my password which I don't. I've reinstalled the game and all the EPs several times but to no avail. I also deleted cache from Microsoft Edge because I read that the Launcher uses IE/Edge. I tried only installing the base game without any EPs but nope. I tried to use the Super Patch I found here but the Patch says it can't find the game (I tried running it from several locations). I may have tried even more but this is all I can remember right now.

I'm really at my wit's end right now so any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Sheila55555  The EA App only barely works with Sims 3 overall, and the App is unreliable and difficult in general.  So while I'm not sure why you can't open the game from the desktop shortcut, it's not surprising to me that you couldn't.

What you can try instead is double-clicking Sims3Launcher.exe or TS3.exe in the game's Bin folder, to see whether either one works better than the shortcut you already have.  If one does, you can create a shortcut for that by right-clicking and selecting Send to > Desktop (shortcut).  This is where to look:

    D:\Games\The Sims 3\Game\Bin

For the launcher login, I don't know what to tell you except that it's also often cranky.  The Store site is barely maintained and goes down often and without warning, but it always comes back online eventually.  You may well have run into a limited outage, or something that wasn't an outage but blocked certain functions for at least some users.  I've seen it happen a lot.

  • Sheila55555  I think "the EA App being the EA App" is about as specific as we can get these days, and it does a lot of work.  I do totally understand the urge to figure things out; it's just that when it comes to the App, some details seem utterly unknowable.  But I'm glad your issue is fixed at least.

  • puzzlezaddict I'm sorry for the late reply. I wasn't at home so I couldn't test your suggestions.

I think (again, can't say with 100% certainty anymore) I tried Sims3Launcher.exe and TS3.exe last week and they didn't work. Sims3Launcher.exe again hasn't worked, but... TS3.exe works! I even tried several times because I couldn't believe it. It worked every time! Thank you for suggesting it because otherwise I wouldn't have tried again. 😁

The Launcher login still behaves the same, I'm logged out after every time I launch the game. But when I ignored the Launcher login and started the game I noticed something by chance. First the game said I wasn't logged in as well, but after a few seconds I was suddenly logged in without me doing anything. So this might even be purely visual.

I think this actually solves all of my problems. Thank you very much for your help! I really would have liked a reason what caused all this (because I'm a person who would like to know the reason behind everything), but I guess the only explanation is 'EA being EA'. Still thanks a lot for your help. 🤩

I get that you can't run the Super Patch on the EA App, it does make sense. I was just so desperate that I tried everything I found.
What I don't quite get is why an EA App needs to be started through the App as the shortcut is made by the App itself (as seen in the screenshot). I started seven other games I have in the EA App (incl Sims 4) through shortcuts and they all worked. The only one not working is Sims 3. It used to work on my old PC I had until November. I think it even worked on my new PC before I reinstalled the game last week, but I'm not entirely sure about this. Could it have something to do with Origin retiring in April?

I can launch Sims 3 and all packs show up. This has been the case ever since I cleared the EA App cache. The only problem (apart from the "Origin is required") since fixing the missing packs is the login problem. And I swear to all gaming gods that I haven't done anything since my last post until I've seen your post today, but I can suddenly log in again! It's like nothing ever happened. Last week I surely tried over a dozen times within two days and it never worked. It just presented me the login field again as if I never entered anything (I recreated it for the picture). The only thing happening now is that I get logged out again after closing the game and reopening the launcher even though I specifically checked "Keep me logged in". This does make me quite anxious and thinking that whatever caused the login problem in the first place might still be around. My version number is 1.69.47.024017.

(I'm sorry if this is a double post. I sent this an hour ago already but I can't find it anywhere anymore. Luckily I copied the text before sending it.)

  • Sheila55555  I apologize for the late reply.  A couple details first:  You can't (and shouldn't try to) run the Super Patch on an EA App install, or at least one controlled by the EA App.  Your patch level is 1.69, so it counts as an EA App install even if you only installed via disc.  An EA App install needs to be started through the App; this is by design.  And the issue with special characters only applies to signing into the launcher or Main Menu, not the EA App.

At the moment, can you launch the game if you go through the EA App, and do all your packs show up?  If not, let me know exactly what you see when you try, including the version number in the lower-left corner of the launcher.

It's not so much the technical issue for me. I really hate the fact that after I have purchased my game, I can't play it unless I login, or have internet service. I shouldn't have to login to play my game. I shouldn't have to go through origin to play a game that I have already purchased and downloaded to mycomputer. I shouldnt have to go online , or sign in to origin, just to say I want to play OFFLINE.  That is ridiculous,  it never was that way before. I dont want to play online, I dont want to have to sign in to play a game that is on my computer.I have been playing the sims since sims 1.
