i am having the exact same problem as this user, i have done a clean uninstall and reinstall, i have loaded the patch, i have changed the settings for the graphics card, and still get "unknown error occurred"
i have a late 2013 macbook pro retina 13' computer. is there any other option?
help is greatly appreciated
@amandav101 I've split your post into its own thread so I don't get the details crossed. (It's a lot easier for me to read the info for each person separately.) Please list the full specs of your Mac, as described in this post:
Please also list the packs you've installed, and any you'd like to install but haven't yet.
Finally, go into Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3, open the file called deviceconfig.log, copy the info between "Graphics device info" (about 25 lines down) and "Options" (about 40 lines down), and paste it here. It's fine if you don't have that file, but let me know.

currently i only have the base game installed, i have EP seasons and late night, ive read late night is a bit of trouble so i would honestly just be happy if seasons works..
the error i get is the "unknown error ocurred"

@amandav101 I take it after your most recent clean uninstall, you've installed the base game only, no packs? (If that's not the case, please do another clean uninstall and reinstall only the base game.) Please also run the Super Patch again, if you haven't since this latest install. Running it later will undo the .sgr edits (as will letting the launcher patch), which is why the order is important.
Speaking of those edits, you'll need the ones for your Intel Iris 5100. Your deviceconfig shows the card isn't currently recognized, so you'll need to edit both graphicscards.sgr and graphicsrules.sgr to add the relevant text. You can find it here:

Once you've done this, restart your computer, and don't open anything aside from Sims 3. You don't even need Origin—just launch the game from Applications.
If it doesn't work, try bypassing the launcher.

If none of this works, please check deviceconfig again, and let me know whether it shows the current [Found: 0, Matched: 1], or it now has a Found: 1 value.
@amandav101 Your Mac has an Intel Iris 5100; I looked it up. There's an entry specifically for the 5100 on the page I linked earlier.
ok i then tried the option to bypass the launcher and i get a blue screen that says
"unable to start game
service initialization failed (0x0175dcbb)"
is this better or worst? ☹️
@amandav101 Okay, let's try tweaking the graphicscards.sgr edit a bit. Where you see this:
card 0x0A2E "4th Gen Intel(R) Core processor graphics HD 5100 Iris - Mobile Haswell - ULT GT3"
Highlight the quoted text (don't highlight the quotes, just leave them), and command-x to delete it. Then highlight this:
Intel(R) Iris Graphics 5100
cmd-c to copy, and cmd-v to paste it between the quotes. It's important to copy, not to type, because the quotation marks will change to a different kind (one that the game can't read) if you type anything anywhere near them. If that happens, or you're not sure whether it did, just copy the quote marks from the first line above. Save and quit.
Now open graphicsrules.sgr, and cmd-F to search for 5100. You'll see this:

Replace the part inside the asterisks (IntelHD5100Iris) with this:

Leave all the punctuation, including the asterisks, intact.
Save your work, quit, restart your computer, and try to launch the game. Please let me know what found and matched values your deviceconfig has after this.
The service initialization error isn't better or worse, it's the same, just what you'd see if you hadn't solved the unknown error.
