Sims 3 keeps crashing after 30 mins (dx diag included)

I accidentally updated my game to the newest 2025 version (1.69.47) a few days ago, and now my game wont run beyond 30 mins. My game used to run 3 - 4 hours with the highest settings, mods, and merged cc. I use RegulSaveCleaner and delete my saves regularly. I also make sure that I have enough running because I have the Task Manager open. Since the update, my game has been crashing.

Things I've tried but did not work:

  • playing in Windows 8
  • playing in Windows 7
  • repairing the game through the EA app
  • removing core mods (Simler's Core Mod and Nraas error trap). These are still removed
  • removed Smooth_Id patch/mod. This is still removed
  • switched affinity to CPU 1 only before switching back to 'all processors'
  • updating the graphics card (it is up to date)

Not sure what it could be! My game was running perfectly fine before the update, and I have been playing in a large world (Alpine County, I think) for years.

  • WaelPatron147  Most of the Sims 3 crashes in your dxdiag point to a component of DirectX 9, which the game uses.  DX9 can't be missing or completely corrupt, since the game opens at all, but it's still worth reinstalling to address any potential issues on that end.  Here's how:

Please let me know how the game runs in Sunset Valley.  Alpine County is known to be a problem because of how large it is, so it's not a good test.  I understand it's worked for you in the past, but in this case, I'd like to know whether the game is crashing all the time, even in ideal circumstances (e.g. in Sunset Valley with no mods other than those from NRaas), or the problem is more limited in scope.

Please also let me know whether you've taken steps to limit your in-game framerates, AND whether the limit you've imposed is holding.  Use the cheat fps on to bring up the fps counter in the upper-right corner of the screen.

You can skip the CPU affinity steps and running the game in compatibility mode.  The former was never necessary for your processor, and the latter doesn't help and can make troubleshooting more complicated.

Thank you so much for your response and time! I reinstalled DirectX9 and I tried running the game in Sunset Valley and it ran perfectly with only the Nraas mods. The fps stayed between 55 - 57 unless I switched to build/buy mode or the map; then it would briefly drop to the low 30s or high 20s for a couple of seconds. I did set the frame rate to 50 fps.

Could a mod be interfering with a component of DirectX9? Most of the other mods have to do with interactions between children and toddler Sims (allowing them to gain skills, allowing the toddlers to do more things like play on a playground), so I don't think they're core mods but I'm not sure. I also have a 'Deep Conversation mod' but I am not sure if that is a core mod either.

  • WaelPatron147  There are only something like seven core mods in existence, and it sounds like you don't have any of them other than possibly NRaas ErrorTrap.  Make sure you have the copy that's made for EA App installs; this version was updated in January to go along with the game update.

There is however an issue with certain toddler mods that come bundled with some older code from a mod that lets adults carry children.  I don't have a full list of the mods that include it, but I do know that it's been found to be part of multiple toddler-related mods.  So I would test those, carefully, and I wouldn't be surprised if one of them turned out to be the source of the crashing.

If you want someone with more specific knowledge to look over your mods list, take the list to the NRaas site and ask if there's any association with the (problematic version of; there might be multiple copies floating around) Skydome_EveryoneCanCarryChild mod.

Got it! I'm thinking it's a mod that has to do with toddler interactions/abilities. Thank you so much for your help!!! 🙏

So my game is running better but I am running into crashes around 45minutes - an hour with my save on Alpine County, but I am thinking it is a memory issue as the file is about 3,000mb while running (2,800 while running) lol. I have removed the suspected mods, updated Nraas' mods, and am still running into these early crashes.

I attached the crash report and I'm thinking its the memory since I don't have a lot of free memory for the game (?). Would 3,000mb crash the game? I thought I had some space left, around 700mb. I might make my sims move towns; they've been here for four generations, though the save file itself is 105mb.

  • WaelPatron147  This particular crash is definitely due to the game running out of memory.  You can see it in the crash log:

    Total virtual memory: 4095 Mb
    Free virtual memory: 49 Mb

Is it possible you're getting a RAM spike from something else going on?  That could still be a bad mod or cc item, but it doesn't have to be.  Saving causes memory spikes, as does entering CAS or Build/Buy, but not usually to that extreme.  On the other hand, if your 2.8 GB memory use is from early in your play session, it's possible the number increased somewhat before you ran into the spike.

I only have Sims 3 and task manager open when I play so I am not sure of what else that could be causing a RAM spike. The memory use is from early in my play session when playing on my save in Alpine County - I moved the family because of this issue and now I can play without crashing; maybe there is a glitch or something using the memory in Alpine county? I have been there for almost gens now. When I play in the test save on Sunset valley, the memory stays around 1,800 - 2,000mb. I merged my cc before accidentally updating the game, but I thought merging cc would help run the game smoother.

  • WaelPatron147  I meant that maybe the RAM use kept increasing while you were playing in Alpine County, that if the numbers you cited were from early in a play session (or when you first started the save, for that matter), they might not reflect what you would have seen had you checked shortly before the crash.

The "free virtual memory" being so low is about the game itself, not the system overall.  Even if you had something else running on your computer that was eating up almost all of your 24 GB RAM, that would be reflected in the "available physical memory" but not the virtual memory, which is the game talking about what it's using on its own.

  • Oh got it! Thanks so much. The 2.8gb memory use was shown very early in my play session in Alpine County. I am wondering if it was the world itself or if it might be a mod. I am leaning toward the world as my mods are pretty updated, though it could be a toddler/child mod as those can get pretty glitchy. You helped me narrow it down a lot!!! Thank you so much 🙏
