A Build/Buy Mode Quality of Life Update is needed!

As mainly a builder in The Sims 4 there are some things that frustrate me. Therefore we really need a major overhaul of Build/Buy mode, especially when it comes to item tagging and also de-cluttering specific areas.

I would like to see Wall Decals be moved into its own special section away from the Wall Art/Paintings. I think we could go even further and have a infant/toddler/child wall art & decal section located in the Kids Bedroom part of the UI and that way it will tidy up the more mature and grown up Wall Art section in the rest of the rooms. I also think Posters could ideally have their own icon in Bedrooms as well. I think Neon Signs could also have their own section, this could ideally be located in the Bar/Dining section of the UI.

We need a drastic but much needed overhaul of clutter items. There are so many clutter items that appear in sections that do not make any sense. For example when you click on Clutter in the Kitchen UI, nearly 80% of those clutter items have nothing to do with Kitchens at all. Each room section in the UI should really have its own Clutter Icon and all of the clutter items in the game should be correctly tagged to appear in those specific sections only.

Wall Textures really need a major looking at as well. There are many wall textures that appear in places that do not make sense.

We need some new ceiling specific textures added to the game.

I also feel like we are in need of another major swatch update with many new swatches for a lot of items.

  • Swatches are VERY frustrating as it stands. There are so many similar non-matching swatches between packs or base game that make many building and decorating options looks just too mismatched. Sadly, some of these are even for newer packs L&D/EbN/R&L can't seem to have the same rich medium wood (and sometimes with a mismatched gold accent), making these packs not look good used together. And some pack swatches don't even match within their own pack too.

    Medium rich/red woods example:

RoM has no Cabinets so trying to match from another pack is impossible! No cross-pack swatch harmony is really annoying.

Medium rich/red woods with different coloured gold accents example:

Some golds are not too terrible for match but still almost never have a match unless the same set from the same pack.Doesn't match from their own pack. The white cabinets on the right is actually the dark grey swatch!Doesn't match from their own pack. The dark grey storage/counters do not match cabinets.

These are just the tip of the iceberg. I really wish they used more universal swatches, at least when they are clearly using similar/like colours. Sometimes you do not want perfectly matched build/buy objects, but other times you want a level of harmony.

L&D vs. R&L reds and teals that make me sad, that I can't use better together example:

  • Yes to all of this. I wasn’t really all that into building until recently so I didn’t really notice how much of a mess it was until now. Using clutter/decoration items for example I constantly had to go into the see all options  just to find the items I was looking for when decorating, especially to find the bathroom kitchen clutter items.

The “wall art” category also bugs me to no end. Why are wall details like cob webs and wall patches in the wall art section when they should be in their own category.

And as another comment already stated more colour swatches so we can actually match items better when decorating would be nice.

  • Oh! And a cheat to disable snap, many times when placing decor on foundations, they snap to the wall above instead, surfaces also have this issue. I can understand snap for "use" items/objects, and to ensure routing, but when that isn't the case, especially for build/decor reasons that shouldn't effect routing/objects use—we would really benefit for more freedom from snap!

edit: Also, the ability to adjust lighting without Live Mode (and without a mod), I usually build while in manage world and no household, having to move someone in to fiddle with lights really annoys me.

    • Stair Update: Curved stairs for curved walls (as well as tower stairs), spiral stairs and free style S-shaped stairs.
    • Curved Wall Compatibility: Snapping/bending decor/furniture (even if is merged into the wall a bit). I love the look of curved walls but not very many things can be placed on them.
    • Activity and Hobby Objects Versatility: I'd love if some activities and hobbies could be done both standing, and sitting. I'd love if for example the Seance Crystal Ball could be used on desks and counters, and not just tables. I sometimes create amazing studies or workrooms, but there isn't anything I can do with them—they are just decorative.
    • Universal Swatch Colour Palette: I found L&D had a decent start to a palette base. Adding a rich purple/violet, blue/navy, a light blue/blue-grey, and 1-2 more lighter wood brown swatches would make it pretty complete. Then have a "no gold/silver detail" accent version, then a light/neutral gold, bright/rich gold and then a silver. After that using this as a universal swatch base (then the extras of already existing swatches).
    • Panels (, Molding and Crown Molding) as Wall Decor: Sometimes you love a wallpaper, but doesn't come with panel options. Panels would serve better as wall decor for more versatility.
I really like the swatches from L&D and CCSP. I'd love a rich purple/violet and blue/navy swatch for furniture. And framing wooden panels for these wallpaper patterns.
    • More and Better Object Placement: I have had a few surfaces that can place some items but not others (despite having the same green square size). Other times you can't center an object on furniture and it only snaps on the sides.
    Bottle Fits...Ingredients do not...
  • I'd also love (for non kitchen/cooking use) 1/2 cabinets (half deep/depth) just for displaying decor and treated as a modular shelving. I love the look of cabinets but sometimes they take up too much room, and to have them as decor and shelving for decor would be amazing!

  • Example of lack of colour harmony (and availability) with the current variety with the existing colours across BB. Some colours have little to matches, there is a decent amount of similar but only some perfect matches (usually from the same pack).

This is a sample of BB items. A sample spectrum of colours we are teased with, but with so many missing and mismatches.

It would be ideal to have a a more matching spectrum based on this swatch group:

    • Black (ultra dark grey)
    • Dark Grey
    • Medium Grey
    • Light Grey
    • White
    • Dark Cool Brown
    • Medium-Dark Cool Brown
    • Medium Cool Brown
    • Light Cool Brown
    • Dark Warm Brown
    • Medium-Rich Warm/Red Brown
    • Light Warm Brown
    • Medium Neutral Brown
    • Light Neutral Brown
    • Navy Blue
    • Dark Green-Blue
    • Medium Green-Blue
    • Turquoise
    • Teal
    • Emerald
    • Medium Cool Green
    • Medium Warm Green
    • Light Turquoise/Teal
    • Light Green
    • Violet
    • Warm/Rich Purple
    • Cool Purple
    • Medium (Slightly Desaturation) Purple
    • Dark Pinkish Burgundy
    • True Burgundy
    • Medium (Slightly Desaturation) Burgundy/Red
    • Rich Neutral Red

Pastels, brights, patterns, etc. would be pack/swatch specific of already existing swatches. The sample spectrum is more or less a suggested base norm—based on L&D/R&L/EbN/RoM/V/PSP/CCSP as well as other packs but mostly these as start colour base.
