Can't access households in main save file

Posting as a last resort to see if anyone else has had this issue or might know how to solve it. I updated my game for the new patch on 4/16, and once it was updated, I found I could no longer access my households in my main save file. This problem didn't occur until after I updated the game. The game / file will load, and I can click on the household, but when I do, I see the loading screen and then the game crashes. There is no in-game error message, or any other information I can figure out as to what is causing this. I have tried:

  • Saving my "saves" folder prior to updating

  • Moving my mods folder / loading with no mods installed

  • Repairing the game in Origin

  • Recovering previous version of the save file

  • Manually recovering previous versions of the save file

  • Replacing the save files with the "saves" folder I copied/saved before updating

  • Replacing the save files with a previously saved copy from two weeks ago, retrieved from my external hard drive

  • Yes, I have deleted the localthumbcache after every restart

I have created a new save file with a fresh game, without mods installed, and I can access the households just fine. Everything in the new save file also works with the mods installed. This is not a mods issue. Furthermore, I can still load my main save file, see the maps, load my library/gallery/access my households via "manage households" and even get into CAS from "manage households." But when I try to click on a household to actually play, the game crashes.

I have over 1000 hours on this save file, I have tons of custom builds and milestones and relationships that I do not want to lose. I have been meticulous about saving my "saves" folder as often as possible, outside of the EA folder, just in case anything happens. I have no idea how this happened or even what is happening. Does anyone have any idea of what might be wrong / what might fix it? I'm desperate. Not being able to retrieve / access my main save file honestly might make me just quit playing altogether, as I don't have the heart, the time, or the attention span to start from scratch in a new file.

Thank you in advance for any help.

@marshmilo7 Could you tell me which packs that come with a world you own ?

EDIT: I'm going to call it a night and don't have much time tomorrow to test but here's what I found

    - There's a few corrupt families in your save that make the game crash. I do not know what's wrong with them at this point

    - All your households in My households seem fine. I can load the game if I delete everyone in other households.

    - So far, I've narrowed down the robles family in San Sequoia (possibly both but the smaller household for sure)

    - Delgato and/or heckling.

There seem to be more potentially.

Maybe you can test some more yourself. Just load the game with load then go to the household manager and start narrowing down which households in other households you need to delete until it stops crashing.

Once we figured this out, it's up to you to say how important they are and if you want to further troubleshoot (it's possible that it's just one Sim in the household).

Since I have all the packs, I have probably a lot families that were created that don't need checking cause it must be one of the ones you own so hence to know which worlds you own would be helpful.

I'll check back tomorrow evening to see if you need further help.

  • @crinrict Omg, thank you so, so much. I deleted the households you mentioned, as well as a couple of households I'd downloaded from the gallery a few days before updating, restarted the game, and was able to access at least one of my households that kept crashing before. I'm going to go in and test my main households to make sure I can access them. I never would have figured this out on my own, so honestly thank you so much again, I really appreciate you taking the time!

I will return to this thread if I run into more issues - thank you again!

@marshmilo7 Happy to hear that helped.

I'm guessing it was probably a relationship to those households but it's hard to tell.

Do make sure to keep this version as backup and always make a new backup before downloading something from the gallery.
