I play rotationally and had a similar experience - except it was a single parent and I knew the Mom had died (laughter) while I wasn't playing her - all trace of her disappeared. However, when I got around to playing a Granddaughter - one day they got the Will in the mail and the heirlooms showed up in their inventories. Huh.
This happened to me once before. Long, long, long ago the unplayed Mother of a Sim I was playing died and just disappeared. Her Family tree showed a blank portrait for her Mother. Not no portrait, just blank.
In the first instance the Mother was from The Gallery. In the second the family was generated by the game.
I think it's a glitch in the culling system. I was never able to recover them.
