New Skin Swatch Order Needs Work

This isn't really a technical issue, but it is a huge problem. I've been playing with genetics since the original December update, and I've noticed that certain issues with genetics will never be resolved because the swatch order doesn't make sense. The latest update helped a lot, but there are still glaring issues with genetics. I'm not sure how it works now with all the different categories, but previously the game would select a random swatch between the parents' swatches. I think on a certain level it still works that way especially within the same category.

The swatches were never in a perfect order, but now they're even worse. The colors should flow from light to dark like a rainbow, but they often go from light to medium to dark to medium and back to dark again. Especially in the warm category. That thing is a mess! See for yourselves.

Here are some swatches that are blatantly out of order.

Why is this important? Because of THIS!

These are two parents I used to test genetics and all their babies. The toddlers were born in game (1st 3 from today 12/14 and last 3 after the first December patch), and the children were random rolls in CAS. These are NOT the children I would expect to come from these two parents! But for whatever reason, every single one of these swatches exist in between the parents' swatches which means the game is using the correct logic. But these swatches have no business being in the order they are in! It makes zero sense and messes up the genetics for future sims born in the game. For example, on the neutrals, how is swatch #10 deemed darker than 9? It should be near the beginning! Where did 9 come from? Ten through 12 are all lighten than it. Swatches 21, 23, 28, and 43 don't even look neutral and are a lot more warm than every other swatch. The warm category is a royal mess and I won't even begin to point out the placement errors. Please, gurus. Please revisit!

I know it's difficult to make a perfect rainbow because of the various undertones, but even with the one-offs they're still a mess. Here are some potential orders for your consideration:

Warm:

1, 2, 3, 7, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11, 12, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 18, 28, 25, 29, 30, 31, 32, 26, 27, 39, 37, 33, 34, 35, 40, 36,41, 43, 42, 45, 44

Neutral:

1, 2 , 10, 4, 5, 3, 11, 6, 12, 8, 19, 14, 15, 21, 23, 17, 28, 18, 24, 30, 43, 38, 37, 33, 32, 35, 39, 40, 34,41, 44, 45, 36

Cool:

 2, 1, 3, 10, 11, 4, 12, 14, 6, 5, 19, 7, 20, 16, 21, 15, 9, 8, 22, 28, 24, 31, 29, 39, 25, 31, 38, 30, 33, 41, 42, 43, 44, 34, 35, 36, 45

  • @Jes2G  You make a compelling point.  However, there was a patch today that is supposed to have fixed some genetics issues with skin tones.  So it would be interesting to see whether anything changed.

Yes, I patched! It helped make some of the kids more mixed which I totally appreciated. The last 3 kids were born before todays patch, and you see they're all super light. The first 3 toddlers were born today after I patched. The patch didn't help the last batch of kids, however, because there are just too many swatches that don't belong between the parents. There shouldn't be light swatches in between medium and dark.

  • @Jes2G  Yeah, I'm not disagreeing with your point.  I was just wondering whether the patch helped or not.  I have no idea how the genetics system works at the game code level, so maybe there was some rearranging.  Or not.  I do know that the devs have acknowledged that this is an issue, so hopefully they'll keep tweaking the system as needed.

  • I would really like to see this get resolved. It is rather annoying to see the lack of organization with the order of shades.

@Jes2G I'm going to move this to General Discussion as it's as you say, not really a technical issue and most possibly a problem on all platforms.

Would be good to hear what issues are still there after yesterday's patch as puzzlez already said.
  • Many tones are not equivalent just because they're lighter or darker, and should not be arranged like that. They should be going in completely separate ways, and exist in 2 or 3 dimensions instead of just laid out in a row.

So for your male sim example, 1-9 is one row, 10-18 is a second row that has no relation to 1-9, and so shouldn't be combined because that would make even less sense.

Yeah! One thing I noticed when I was trying to come up with a more sensible order is that there are different undertones within each color tone. Like, within warm there are some that are MUCH warmer than the rest while some were closer to neutral. I could easily pick them out and make them flow like a rainbow, but making all those groups flow into each other just isn't possible. But, I could live with that. That's how the old skins were anyway. There were just a handful of skins. But 100? There's too many not to notice.
