New update messed up my entire game

Hi,

I update my game yesterday, everything worked fine. But When I logged back, the lots I built had not been saved (yet they appear as such in the map), and I couldn't play any household as I was kicked back in the world select screen each time.

I tried to repair my game, clear the cache, fix the broken mods, but now my packs aren't reloading and I can't even get pass the main menu, as it keeps telling me that my packs are not downloaded (yet I can't download them anywhere, as they are marked as unavailable in game and already installed on the EA app).

I'm clueless and have no idea how to fix this

  • Hi Erkiazz

did you test with no mods/cc at all ?

As for the pack issue: Is that in the game ? Do they show as installed in EA app ?

I did and nothing changed, so I supposed the problem wasn't coming from it. I also keep getting the same 2740 lines long lastexception the moment I log in

They do seem installed in the app, whereas this is what shows up when trying to log into the game. Would maybe deinstall them and putting them back on would fix any part of the issue ?

    Thank you !

I ended up deleting the game and now the packs are back, but the main issue is still here

  • Erkiazz  Please try loading the oldest backup you have of this save.  Use the manual method here:

    https://sims4.crinrict.com/eng/2014/09/recover-backup-save-game/

Whether or not your backup has all the lots, don't save your progress, or if you want to keep playing, use "save as" and rename the save so the currently-intact backup doesn't get corrupted.

If the backup is NOT intact, keep the game open, put it in windowed mode if it isn't already, open Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > saves > scratch, and post screenshots of the files inside.  You're looking for tiny files: a few bytes rather than KB or MB.  You can click the Size header, while in list view, to sort by size.

While you're there, right-click one of the files and select Get Info, then look at the location under Where.  Let me know whether iCloud is in the file path.

  • Erkiazz  Have you tried creating a new game?  If not, then please do so.  And if you have, can you enter a lot that shows a house on it at the map and is the lot empty or have a house on it?  Please check several.  Tbh, this sounds like this issue:  Neighboring Houses show as Default/Empty | EA Forums - 11903590 or possibly this one. Houses/Lots Disappear | EA Forums - 11901268

Please read them to check if your issue falls into one of them.

    Hope this helps.

I have 43 save files going from Slot_00000002.save to Slot_00000008.save.ver4, slot 8 being the most recent one, but it did not change anything. I don't appear to have iCloud anywhere either

I created a new game but unlike the other ones, I can't even enter a lot in build mode nor in play mode. I can't even get past the loading screen, so maybe it is closer to the second issue you pointed out ?

It would not be ideal, but I don't mind that much restarting the game from scratch. Would it be an option to keep a version of my saves on my computer just in case, and deleting the game entirely to clease it ?

  • Erkiazz  Do you use a third-party antivirus or some kind of cleaner app on your computer?  If so, which one, and does it help to temporarily disable it?

The 9-byte files are suspicious and a possible sign of corruption.  However, it's possible to have a few if you load a save that hasn't been exposed to new content you own.  Do you get any of these files in a save or backup that has previously been played with all your existing content?  That shouldn't have any 9-byte files, and a new one shouldn't either.

Separately, a good test would be to create a new admin user account on your Mac and try playing there.  Don't link it to your Apple ID or import any settings from your old account.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the game itself shouldn't affect your saves or other user data.  But it's always a good idea to have a backup copy of your saves somewhere else just in case.  If you do decide to reinstall, use the default location (/Applications/EA Games) or an external drive; don't install to Documents or anything like that.

Erkiazz Keeping earlier versions of saves is always an option as long as you have space for them on your computer.  And to uninstall then reinstall the game is always an option.  For most problems though, a repair will do the same thing more or less.  Neither affects your user folder though.  So, which you do is up to you.

There is one thing you can try that hasn't been discussed.  You can create a new user folder (The Sims 4).  Steps to do that are here:  📓[GUIDE] Clean User Folder Approach | EA Forums - 12690428.  If a new user folder doesn't fix the problem, then you will probably be better off to salvage what you can from this save and start a new one.  Given that the bug fix team is working on issues that I linked previously, you might want to hold onto the save so you could go back to playing it should the team come up with a fix in the near future.

    Hope this helps.
