Purpose of Residence Keys

I don't understand how Residence Keys are supposed to work in the game. I would think that by giving a sim a residence key, it would allow them to enter the house when the door is locked. This does n...

    Apart from checking there is no other lot trait interfering with it, like "Private Dwelling"? (which discourages visitors)

    From IGN TS4 'Apartments" Guide "..."Keys to friends have no direct benefit other than having a close relationship stop by often. Keys cannot be given to friends for houses in the suburbs in this way."

Hi @Atheis56 Do you use any mods?

I have heard similar problems, though I've never used the feature, that there needs to be a 'Good Friends' status with the person that receives the key.. which also makes sense.

    No mods. Never any installed or removed.

    How are the Residence Keys intended to work?

    Does this mechanic have nothing to do with the locked/unlocked status of a front door, but simply allows a sim to enter an unlocked house without knocking first? Doesn't make sense to me. Keys work in locks. Residence keys should open the locked residence. Yet the mechanic does not work at all. Bugged? Blurry? Or is my specific game coded just to annoy me? Confounding.
