Resume (top right corner) will take you to the most recently opened saved game and immediately plays the most recent family. Sounds like you accidentally opened an older save and now that's the most recent.
Try Load Game, load the saved game you want to play. Use the Load Game panel, not the Resume button.
You should see the map screen, and then be able to click on your family's house from there.
Thing is, the load game panel does show my most recent family but actually clicking on it takes me all the way back to the very old one. No sim that's come after my older family shows up in game but all their houses do. They only show up in my gallery, not in world like they should
