Sims reading outside during bad weather?

I dunno if this is a bug or just my Sims being doofuses, but more than once I observed it now that my Sims, when they read something will go outside if a place to sit is available. If it were the closest or most comfortable seat, I could blame it on that, but it usually isn't.

I nearly lost a Sim to the cold because I was taking care of the toddlers of the household, had ended the initial reading and send the sim into the shower... and instead she apparently went right back to reading and nearly froze to death.

Sims should not go outside to read or do homework when the weather's bad.

Is that intentional or a bug?

  • @MeltingPenguins Not sure if there is anything buggy going on there (you would think they'd have the sense... ya, right... but I have found that it's not always about if the seat outside or in a particular location is the most comfortable. It is a combination of factors sometimes, and may vary per sim (ie: if you have an outdoor loving sim). Other factors that can draw them like crazy to eat to a location is the comfort and closeness for convenience/comfort (as you mentioned) and environment. The environment rating/appeal/quality can be very high outside.  You could try some things like putting very, very comfortable furniture in the living room, adding a bunch of items with high environment scores, a high quality TV and high quality computer, a gaming pad (that rascal has fun of 10!), removing the back door (so they'd have to walk much further), remove the bench/seating from the back yard for now, things like that, and see if this helps curb this issue or if they still go to the back yard like a magnet.

  • @MeltingPenguins I've often seen it where teens in my game will go outside to do their homework. They'll do this even when there are no outside chairs at all, they'll just crouch on the ground! I think it's just a case of Sims being Sims. I'm currently playing a Sim enrolled at the Foxbury University. Whenever I click on her textbook to have her study, instead of sitting at the desk in her dorm room she will get up and randomly walk to a different room to study. The desks and chairs are all of the same quality, I think she does it just to annoy me! xD

I mean, I've read about AIs doing much weirder, but I'd love to see what the code uses to determine where the sims sit to read and why they don't get back inside when they are turning blue from cold

@MeltingPenguins I know, right?? The lack of 'common sense' response when a sim's blue and 'freezing to death' is very upsetting to me. I love the concept of having the sensitivity to temperature on in my game for pushback and interest, but I love my sims staying alive more, so unfortunately I have turned this setting off in my game unless the code for this issue gets some love in upcoming patches.

I deactivate weather effects on sims in my game. This can be done in the game save by going to 'Game Options' > 'Seasons' > and un-check the box that says "Enable Temperature Effects On Sims". Personally, I do this because of the issue you're complaining about... the sims do not always automatically change to the weather-appropriate clothes they need to keep themselves from 'overheating to death' or 'freezing to death' (life-threatening conditions). I see this as unfair and inappropriate to proper/logical gameplay, so until this (hopefully someday) is different, I uncheck this box & save settings:

Plus, as @RandomBuzziness stated, some things just aren't going to be logical all the time and sometimes it's just sims being sims - and that dynamic is part of the fun of the game! 🙌
