- @gooochyeee Yes I saw the frogs and fish problem a while ago and I added a tip on that thread that works for me, I turn off auto light in the rooms where frog and fish tanks are. As soon as I did that, mine came back. I know someone else that tried that and it didn't work for them, but if you haven't tried it then it might be worth a try. I noticed my tanks were kind of switching off when the lights did and taking my critters with them.๐ธ

I don't buy all the packs, not just because I don't have the money or the specs, but because I don't think I need all of it.
While pets are cute, I found them quite annoying in TS2 and ever since I just don't think I am going for it. I probably also won't get Cottage Living and I definitely will not get Bust the Dust. I'm not much into vampire, werewolves and that kind of stuff, but I'm thinking whether I should give them a shot, once I have the other packs that are on my wish list.
For the ones I have, I noticed I appreciate different things about each pack that I wouldn't want to miss - even if I don't use the gameplay much or become annoyed at how limited/bugged it is (e.g. Get Famous).I haven't used the careers or stores from Get To Work very often. Owning a store was fun, but then I rotate households a lot and they offer too little to just visit for fun. The careers aren't too interesting to me either, and I didn't like those lots at all (not really helpful for an efficient gameplay). But mostly, lot changes require loading screens, and can take up a lot of time, so it doesn't seem really feasible to me. BUT I do enjoy many of the BB items and some CAS so I wouldn't want to miss it. And I probably just need to test out the rest of the gameplay a bit more.
Dine Out is pretty similar for that, I've managed restaurants once or twice and I barely use them to travel to. But I don't want to play without the BB items. Those brick walls have been used in so many of my builds, it's totally worth it.
I'm not sure I really needed the Country Kitchen or Plants kit, because I really don't use them much. But I can live with that.
Vampires. I never use it and itโs hella annoying heaving the threat of vampires come bite your sims at night
@OkayLazySim I don't always stick around to run my retail lots but I find them essential for two reasons. Firstly not all my Sims are collectors or crafters/artists. So the ones that are have retail lots to sell what they've found or crafted. I get them to stock a store with paintings, collectables, crafted furniture, flower arrangements or items that are locked in bb mode. When I switch households my next Sim immediately goes shopping when they get their house. So they can add snowglobes or paintings or jungle vases and so on. I just did a furniture department store with the Eco Living crafted furniture and a shopping mall with small gift shops. I'm reminded of getting my house years ago and heading out looking for new stuff. I add some food trucks to some too.
Secondly, I use them to add extra homes. I add a small shop with an apartment or an adjacent private house. My favourite is a Sulani gift shop with a 2 bed family beach house next to it. My Sims spend their down time there without opening the store and it's locked so only Household Members can access the residence. My florist has 3 places. She has her house and 2 retail lots with apartments above them.
@Ssannevries that's the same reason I won't add vampires/werewolves. I'd really love to own those worlds but without the occults. Or have them be like Glimmerbrook where the Spellcasters don't hassle you or impact mortal Sims. I've said before I wish there was a toggle to switch those particular occults off and I'd happily buy the packs then.
I'll say something truly saddening, and hope this might help someone else who still considers buying:
My biggest Sims 4 regret ever is Dream Home Decorator.
I was hyped for this pack.
I preordered this pack.
I have waited for fixes and re-tried the pack many times to give it a chance.
Dream Home Decorator is my biggest Sims letdown that has permanently repelled me from preordering anything, buying packs for a full price or following Sims news excitedly.
For all other players out there, I have to sadly recommend the same.
This pack still does not work as intended. It has been years, from the hurried launch and haphazard repairs, and Dream Home Decorator still does not work in any way that could be expected. Sims is a franchise worth millions upon millions. A franchise which has a massive fanbase for building as a gameplay feature.
To many, myself included, Sims is primarily a building simulator.
Dream Home Decorator in itself is the price of a full videogame, and it's gameplay consists almost entirely of the creation of a fun and rewarding building experience...
Except it still is not fun and still does not reward. Nothing in DHD adds to the building gameplay in an entertaining, challenging or new way.
To make this criticism a little more constructive, here are some ideas how such a pack in the future could be more rewarding:
- The game should judge the project solely based on the parameters shown or the parameters stated by the sim making an order, as things are, it is pretty much impossible to receive a positive review from a large household
- Instead of randomized likes, the game should come with pre-determined likes and dislikes for Maxis-made townies
- Instead of randomized generic projects like adding a basement or decorating a nursery, the game could have a large number, hopefully hundreds, of text prompts, perhaps with an element of random generation. "I want... a water garden... a dark mermaid basement... a mysterious nursery... a veranda for bachelor parties... a clown living room."
- The game could come with a list of required items based on room type/theme, like in Sims 3's home decorator pack.
- the pack should be playtested sufficiently to rid it of gameplay-disruptive bugs well before launch
If you enjoy the furniture, perhaps consider buying this pack if it is on a good discount. Otherwise, do not bother.
- @Strangelovekraft DHD was the pack I wanted the most before it's launch. It reminded me a bit of the Sims IKEA add on from years ago which I bought but didn't get to play as I had technical problems with the laptop at the time. I was so gutted.
So along came DHD and it was all my kind of taste in furniture, I was excited about the modular options. I was super excited about the career because I'm a Sim builder. But...as you said it's just so broken. So much potential, infinite furniture combinations but so many bugs both in the furnishings and the career. Still not fixed after such a long time.
I still use it a lot, I mean the kitchen units were really needed as the kitchens are way too old fashioned IMO and it needed modern kitchen units. Plus they mix and match well with the Snowy Escape kitchens which on their own, look half finished.
But the other units have to be used very carefully indeed and tested in various combinations before they stay put. Otherwise half the furniture and decor disappears to the Household Inventory every time you travel or leave the household.
As for the career, well again so much promise but so very bugged. I just want to say to everyone who would like to play with the build mode items and the world, but is holding back because of vampire attacks, that, so far, I haven't had a vampire attack a sim unless I've directed it to happen. I don't know whether vampires has been patched or whether I've just been lucky?
I owned vampires for a long time before I decided to play the pack, and aside from having the pre-made vampires come to the door occasionally, I was barely reminded the pack and world existed. If I use the 'Disallow Vampires' option on the front door, I don't see vampires at all.
I've been playing Vampires for a while, and I'm enjoying it, even though I manage to creep myself out a lot. I've made myself uncomfortable making a vamp sim visit a household with children or pets, so I totally understand people who don't want to buy the pack because it's ooky.
I'm still being careful. All my played sims have garlic planted somewhere on their lots, or one of the garlic items hanging in their house, and I haven't tested what happens when there's no garlic. I'll probably test a household without garlic soon and see what happens, because I think, so far, garlic has so far stopped all unplayed vampires from doing anything bad on a lot. Making assumptions based on what my played vampires' experience, they probably become too nauseated to drink, or even stay long on the lot.
For my played vampires, who have garlic immunity, I have plasma packs in their inventories, and I've noticed that, so far, when they visit, they always drink a plasma pack. The 'no vampires' door option would stop them from visiting too, though I'm allowing vampires on most lots and having my sims be friendly with them, because I'm honestly curious to see if there's a situation where a vampire does come onto the lot to attack the household I'm playing.
One weird thing I noticed--when I played my vamp, he visited the household I'm playing now and made friends, and he has the 'beloved' trait, as well as maxed Charisma, so he should still know my sims--but when the household I'm playing now ran into him, they didn't know him and introduced themselves. I'm pretty sure I didn't wipe their memories. I'll have to check that out and find out what happened.
I just wanted to let you all know, who are maybe looking for new game play and more build mode items, because Vampires and ROM seem to run relatively smoothly, compared to some of the packs I've been reading about here and elsewhere. I only have one issue with ROM, and it's not really even an issue. It's because it's god-mode. It's really hard for me to not turn a sim into a ROM mage because of how the animations look, how everything works so well, and because the powers are so convenient.
- @Crayola4321 I love ROM and I find it blends really well with Paranormal (as a total fraidy cat that's as spooky as I go lol). I use Glimmerbrook Watch for that purpose, my Paranormal Investigator is based there. Surprisingly, it also blends well with cottage living. It's the perfect spot to add wild birds, foxes, rabbits. I've done this for my Wiccan Sim.

Journey to Batuu. It's hollow and a glorified Star Wars ad. I stupidly--and should have known better at this point (Shame me once, shame on you. Shame me 30 times, shame on me)--thought it would be better fleshed out with Disney backing the pack. Which meant more money and better resources and marketing.
But no. There's no actual aliens (dunno why since the very first pack (Get to Work) gives us Aliens). Just random Sims in masks. R2D2 is a basically a stereo outside of Batuu. It was also immersive breaking. I mean I had Kylo Ren as my co-worker in the Entertainment Career while his female counterpart (her name escapes me) hung out at the pool. The missions were frivolous with a lot of going back and forth. You can't customize anything. And outside of Batuu, your Star Wars base looks way out of place.
I had hoped it would be used in conjunction with Get to Work when I go do my Mad Scientist gameplay. But I've never touched it since. Heck, the smaller and even emptier Saxim hidden lot is better.
So I originally said MWS but I'm here to say that that pack is mostly functional and I want to amend my answer.
Dream Home Decorator (DHD) is by far the most disappointing pack I've bought because the only gameplay element is fully broken. The CAS and BB are great but the whole career that made this a GP is broken: no pay, no promotions, and you have to leave the lot by travelling to finish the job. It's a disaster and it's a shame because it was such a fun way to redesign the worlds bit by bit. It's been over a year since it broke (with the HSY patch) so if you were thinking of buying it, please reconsider until you see it fixed in a patch note because right now, it is not worth it.
