Are "no work" holidays supposed to take away my work vacation days???

So, winterfest is on a Thursday and my sims normally work on Thursdays. Of course, this is a "no work/no school" holiday and they did not go to work, were never prompted to, never made any calls to call out of work, etc.

After the holiday was over I realized they were down to 2 vacation days each when they had 3 each. I created a test file and played through another no work/no school holiday and watched the vacation days for the adults AND the children (their school vacation days) and it takes away from it!

Is this a glitch or is it supposed to be this way? It's so bizarre...

Hm, is this why I can’t make any more holidays. Because my sim has no holidays left?

You can make as many as you like, just not multiple ones on the same day. Holidays with no work/school currently count towards your Sims' vacation days, and are paid until their vacation days have run out, after which they can still have holidays with no work/school but unpaid, until they've earned new vacation days.
  • I just started playing rotational with Seasons installed last night so I will get back later with how it works for me but I loved using holidays in my rotation.

In my save there is my main family that I play for 3 days and then I had set up a "Townie Day"-holiday with sims being off from school and work. That day I just logg in and out of the entire town to check up on things, set up relationships, make sure that the new teens that aged up get into clubs and little things like that. It was so so relaxing to have every single sim away from work or school when I started a new household. Before I always had to call sims back from school or work when I rotated into random Townie-household-Nr-35 in order to make sure that the husband and wife had the right jobs since they were living near the science plant and make sure the kiddos had clubs. Just logging in everywhere and all sims are available. It was heaven!!

So this makes me use one holiday every 4:th day just in order to keep my rotational town progressing, it was just such a great system so I like to keep it. We will see what I have left after that for actual holidays but if I have to choose between painless rotation between households or holidays I will go with painless rotation. It was just so much fun just to zip around town and just set things up.

That's an interesting perspective. And you are quite right.

With the current system where no work/school holidays take away from our Sims' vacation time, there isn't much room left for Sims to go on actual vacations to the jungle or the woods, or take some time off for whatever. Now, if the gurus will follow people's feedback, and separate holidays from vacation, so that holidays no longer eat our Sims' precious vacation days, that problem will be eliminated.

@KLAlexis No, events and holidays are two different things. You can create your holidays for the entire year right away. But events you can only create up to two weeks in advance. Events are just the various parties in the game, like dinner party, house party, toddler play date, etc.

Thank you :). That is really lovely to know.
  • The holidays are set up so that they use up vacation time and once that runs out the holidays are unpaid. Could vacation time in general not be altered to work in the same way? So at any point we can take a day off work but we will only be paid if we have the vacation days available. I like the challenge of having to earn vacation time in order to still be paid but I don't want to be unable to take days off when I want.

Maybe add several "Day off work/school" options instead of the singular. Suggestions:

    • Major Holiday - Most sims celebrate this Holiday - Unpaid day off, doesn't use PTO allowance. If you have the day off anyway you get a day in lieu (unpaid day off whenever you want it).
    • Minor Holiday - Some sims celebrate this Holiday/Easy to fit around work - Optional day off work (pop-up similar to during events asking if you want to take PTO/UTO), uses PTO/UTO allowance if you take the day off.
    • National Day - Sims observe traditions on this day, but business continues as normal - You need to book PTO/UTO in advance if you want this day off.

This would require adding UTO (unpaid time off) but this could be useful for other things too (bereavement leave etc).

Or maybe, have national holidays, which are paid time off, and other holidays, which you can take off, but you don't get paid for... unless you have accumulated holiday leave.

Here in Oz, we have public holidays (Christmas, newyear, queens birthday, easter, Australia day, various others), which you'd get paid for time off, or you'd get additional pay for working on them (people in the food service industry are the ones likely to be working then).

You also earn your annual leave by working, in game, you could work 3 days, to get one paid day off. or something like that. Work 6 days, get 2 paid off. Have your paid days off following a public holiday and you get 3 paid days off in a row.

They could limit the abuse of this system by limiting the number of paid public holidays off. eg, 1 per season
  • Not sure if this has been mentioned, but what if there are a set number of free paid holidays per year? Like if there are 6 for example, if a player adds so many non-working holidays, days off beyond the 6th holiday will use up vacation days.

Or maybe just add more free vacation days at the start of the year to counteract this

I don't know... Quite a few holidays have passed in my game and I still haven't seen any vacation days taken. They always have the same number afterwards, if not more. Is this another case of Guru miscommunication?

Maybe the whole system is just broken.
  • Well, it IS a US based company. Our work culture here is dismal when compared to many places in Europe where 6 weeks of vacation time is normal. Many workers here don't get paid sick days much less vacation time. So, in this context it makes sense that our poor sims suffer under a similar system. At lest they have "freerealestate" and "motherlode" cheats.
