@halloweenchild, I actually made that post to show what can happen when complaining about the way the game plays can result into a forced quest line. You are now forced to join the guild, can't say no or avoid joining the guild. The devs listened to the complainers and the quest line is the way they tried to appease the complainers. Which is sad because all you had to do in the earlier games was load your game and try to join the guild again, avoiding what made you fail when you tried the first time.
Oh yeah I got that, sorry I was just venting my frustration at the questline itself (played it again recently so my feelings are still fresh in my mind). Actually, the whole "It was too hard to get into X guild in previous games" is littered throughout Skyrim, it's probably why, in one way or another, the Guild questlines are tied to the main plot or introduced with the subtly of a sledgehammer. Same goes with a lot of the Deadric quests as well, now that I think about it. :-/
But you are right, trying to appease the complains just leads to nowhere because it ends up leaving the following game lacking in the more challenging aspects of gameplay. While I think some things should be easier (quest markers are a godsend in my personal opinion, but others might disagree) I still think there needs to be a balance of difficult gameplay that challenges the player just enough without it being too much.
