I wouldn't say it's forced inclusiveness. Heck, everything about it is out of the way and has to be manually selected, so those who don't want to deal with it never have to even look at it.
It's an update that unlocked tons of outfits and accessories that were locked to the opposite gender, gives you another way to customize your sims' appearances, and allows people to make sims they've been wanting to do for years. The gender options allow for greater customization for your sims (including the ability to sterilize them if you so want.) It was also an enormous boon for storytellers who are interested in these elements. I know I've been making a lot of use of this update - from crossdressing sims to using certain clothes as a gender-neutral school uniform for my kids.
Don't get me wrong, I want meaningful gameplay too. But the gender update gave a lot of people a ton of content to customize their sims and make them what they want to be.
