Impossible to learn potions from experiment

Its literally impossible for me to learn potions from the cauldron, it takes forever and I have to ask other mages to teach me a potion recipe but it takes the fun out of the game..

I'm level master and yet only the first potion I learned from experimenting with the cauldron but the others I had to ask other mages..

Is this how it's supposed to be? Or my game is bugged?

  • I've generally had bad luck with learning via experimentation and practicing magic. Out of ... well, I want to say at least 10 ... spellcasters, I think I've learned a total of ten spells and five potions across all of them by experimentation and practice. Admittedly, some I didn't really try (It was a legacy, so I'd built up their collection of spellbooks over the years and used that as much as possible.)

Other people apparently have had it easier, so I think it's just bad luck.

That actually sounds cool. I don't have RoM yet. I plan to buy it but have decided to go with other packs first cause i was afraid it would be too easy... So, this is good news to me

Befriend the sages and ask them for potion recipes. Then once you have done that, find other spellcasters so you can duel with them for knowledge.
  • You could Search For Tomes at the Magic Realm or buy them at Casters Alley. Some of the tomes are for potions.

Never mind, @Sindocat already suggested this.

It seems to be one of those things that is easier if your Spellcaster has a bloodline trait. Faunus has a Weak Bloodline - one parent is a caster - and he seems to get a recipe every 2 out of 3 times he experiments - Virtuoso, all Spellcaster perks unlocked. But I agree it seems maddeningly random and slow, expecially compared to "Research Alchemy" in TS3: Supernatural, where research practically guaranteed a new recipe unlock.

    For faster unlocks:

    • Once acquainted, the Sages will teach your Sim a potion once per day, provided they have the Spellcaster rank to learn them.
    • Search For Tomes is an interaction on bookcases at Magic HQ. Potion tomes are included.
    • Duel for Knowledge can teach potion recipes if your Sim wins.
    • Remember to check the wands, tomes and familiars shop - the stock changes daily.

How to get Bloodline trait? I'm Virtuoso but still can't learn potions from cauldron I'm sorry it just too boring to wait 5 hours and still not learning anything and asking other mages to teach me potion recipes works but takes the fun out of it :/

Bloodline trait is genetic. Your spellcaster's kids will have the weak bloodline trait. As long as they're spellcasters, their children will have the Strong Bloodline trait, and again, as long as they're spellcasters again, their children (so your character's great grandchildren) will have the ancient bloodline trait.

This can be slightly circumvented by having kids with already active spell casters, but I think only the Charm family actually has the trait.

(You can also cheat it on, which I did for Bella and her kids in one save.)

And I'm going to second dueling for knowledge and searching for tomes and checking the store. Tomes are probably the second fastest way to learn spells after direct from the sages.
  • I have a husband and wife who are new spellcasters. The wife has the Purveyor of Potions aspiration and the husband has Spellcraft and Sorcery, so I have the wife learning her potions by experimenting on the cauldron while the husband learns his spells by practicing magic. So far the wife is a level 3 Adept but only knows 4 potions while the husband is a level 2 Acolyte who knows 12 spells, 4 from each school of magic.

Experimenting is a fairly slow way to learn potions but it does work. It just takes patience. It probably helps to take the Experimenter and Insightful Eye perks, the wife has both of these.

This bloodline thing is what has me more interested in RoM (i still don't have this pack). I find it so appealing to try to have an ancestral bloodline of spellcasters. And if it improves the way sims learn spells and potions than it's perfect!
