Game randomly unpauses or runs while paused

Title says it all; I pause the game and two, five, ten minutes later I see my game running, sometimes at fast or extra fast speeds even though I usually only play at regular speed. No mods, no CC. Packs installed are Cottage Living, Cats and Dogs,  Eco Lifestyle, and the small pets kit. This is absolutely a bug I wasted over a dozen hours confirming over the weekend. To test I would load the game, play a minute or two to get things moving then pause, making sure the cursor was hovering over an innocuous spot on the screen and not over any control "buttons".. Within five to fifteen minutes I would check and often saw the game running.

At one point I noticed that even if the game did not unpause, time would still pass, as the lighting would change. A wiggle of the mouse would cause the clock to refresh and show that an hour or more had passed WHILE PAUSED. My last attempt to figure this out had my Sim preparing to start a new painting to complete her work task. I paused her in front of the freshly spawned canvas at 18:03 with 50% of work task completed. About 40 minutes later I check back and neighborhood is dark but clock still showed 18:03 so I move the cursor and clock refreshes to show midnight, sim's needs bars change--a couple suddenly red, and my Sim had their work task completed even though the canvas was still blank (as it should have been). I had been looking for a problem on my end until that but the game still partially advancing while "paused" is not a graphics card issue. Not being able to trust a pause to stay paused is bad enough but not being able to trust a pause to actually be a pause is a fundamental problem.

This has been occurring since the trio of patches that came with the For Rent release. If the latest patches had not made build mode such a buggy slog I could just stick with building but I bought this game--yes, I bought the base game before went free, so I could play the whole game. As it stands, I cannot play at all now unless I want to close the game every time I have to step away for a drink or loo break and, oh yeah, the app has been failing to resolve properly even more the past month so it often takes a couple hours just to be able to launch the game.

  • Hi @MercyLeigh Could you test in a clean folder, please? Exit Sims 4 then drag your whole Sims 4 folder from Document > Electronic Arts to your desktop. Launch Sims 4 and reset your Options. Test in a new save to see how that behaves. If it does, exit, copy your old save files out of the old folder into the new one and load your regular save to test that.
