Cursor turns into magnifying glass

I bought a Macbook Air M1 (2020) recently and decided to install Sims 4 on it tonight, just to preface that this is a fresh install. When I start the game, my cursor turns into a magnifying glass in the launcher and I can't click anything. 

Googling has led me to an older topic in this forum with the same problem, where it was suggested to toggle between windowed and full screen mode and/or delete the options.ini. 

Playing in windowed mode does fix the problem, but I'd rather play fullscreen to allocate more resources to the game. Sadly, switching back to fullscreen restores the problem. Deleting options.ini and restarting the game did not help. 

Any ideas?

Edited to add that I'm running Monterey.
