You'd be better off installing the game on the external which is easy to do within Origin > Preferences > Installs & Saves > Game library location.

For the game not launching - rename the Mods folder (add a 1 or something in the file name), trash the localthumbcache.package file and try launching again.

    Lol I just literally was able to just get it to launch. I did the simple trick of deleting cache, repair in origin, and restarting my mac. Thank you so much for your posts. I would have not been able to do it without them!! And I will definitely be using an external hard drive from now on.
