Re: Sims 4 freezing after Ventura 13.5.1 update

Start with a completely new clean Sims 4 folder again and see if it still happens - https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues-Mac/READ-FIRST-Sims-4-Mac-Help-Guides-and-Troubleshooting/m-p/4612394#M163

Can you also provide more information about your Mac. Instructions on how to do so and what to provide here - http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-Mac/READ-FIRST-Sims-4-Mac-Help-Guides-and-Troubleshooting/m-p/4612396/highlight/true#M162

Model: MacBook Pro, 13-inch 2020 Four Thunderbolt 3 ports

    OS: Ventura 13.5.1

    Processor: 2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5

    Memory: 16 GB 3733 MHz LPDDR4X

Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 1536 MB

I am playing just the regular version, not Legacy.

My computer does have Jamf Protect installed, but it’s never caused issues before I updated to the new Ventura. Unfortunately, I can’t disable any antivirus software as this is my work computer.

I did all the steps listed in the link, and it actually ran for about 10 minutes—before freezing again. So I got a little longer out of it.

Thanks for your help! I’d hate to have to buy a new PC if I don’t absolutely have to, since it’s always worked on my work Mac before…

Thanks. Try playing offline by launching Origin then turning off wifi on your Mac then launching the game.

I wonder if the antivirus needs updating now you've updated Ventura?
  • Hi, and thank you for all your help. Apologies for my delay! I tried playing without WiFi and still had the same problem. The computer now gets hot when I try to run the game; unfortunately I think it may just be incompatibility with Mac and the amount of power the game takes. I welcome any further suggestions, but not confident I’ll be able to run it on this computer anymore.

The game is compatible on your Mac but your Mac isn't terribly powerful which will be contributing to the poor gaming experience you're having. It's common for laptops to get hot when gaming. Games use more resources and power which in turn generate heat. Your 13" MBP has one fan which will most probably be working hard to cool your Mac. It also has an integrated Intel CPU/GPU which is limited in how much grunt it can provide.

Make sure you play with your Mac on a hard surface so air can circulate and think about getting a laptop stand/USB cooler to help. If you can lower the temperature the game will perform better because the OS won't be throttling power to the game to protect itself from overheating.

If you have a ton of CC/Mods consider culling them. The more functionality you add into the game, the more processing the game has to do. This applies to adding more DLC and even patching as Maxis add new features to the base game.

The Apple Silicon Macs are truly a game changer, maybe you/work could consider upgrading to one? I now play predominantly on the 2020 M1 MacBook Air with the most basic specs and it runs better than on my 2017 15" Intel machine with a dedicated 4GB AMD GPU and 3.1GHz quad core CPU with 16GB RAM and dual fans. The Silicon machine barely gets hot and it doesn't' even have a fan. Apple's new architecture is truly amazing 🙂
  • Thank you so much for the advice! Even on a laptop stand it gets really hot just with Sims. No CC or mods downloaded, so it may just be the amount of software on the computer. It’s running out of charge really quickly anyway, so may be due for an upgrade. I’ll continue trying. I appreciate the help!

Yep, that’s completely normal and has always been my experience running the game on Intel machines. I also play on a 15” Intel MBP. It has dual fans and gets really hot on a hard surface and elevated. The fan runs super loud on my 27” iMac with an i9 Intel CPU, 8GB AMD GPU and 32GB RAM and the machine still gets hot. It’s normal on Intel equipped Macs and Simming 🙂
