So update: I was playing around with it and realized my Alias folder does not show up as a folder when the USB is unplugged and maintains the same icon when plugged in. Could this be the issue? Have you any experience with this?

I figured it out!! After updating, my alias link stopped working where my mac was no longer reading the EA folder on the USB. I opened up the USB and deleted the alias saved on my mac originally. Holding ⌥-⌘ I dragged the file to my documents, which then my sims started working again! Unfortunately, my saves did not go with it, which I will have to figure out but at least the error has been resolved 🙂

Ah, so you had created the symlink? If asking for help in the future please make sure you state this as troubleshooting is different. The "already running" error is typical when the game is launched from an external that cannot be accessed, it's here in the guide - https://bluebellflora.com/saving-your-sims-4-folder-to-an-external-drive/
