Crashing problem -- tried clean booting & reliability monitor

For about a month my game has had a consistent crashing problem. In the beginning it was maybe an hour or two before it started acting up; lately it's maybe 10-15 minutes before the game crashes. I've tested with updated mods/cc, no mods/cc, and even emptying my saves and tray bc that seemed to help (but didn't in the end...). Sometimes it'd crash before even opening probably, but that occurence is in the minority.

After going through some of the threads here I tried clean booting both with and without wifi -- still crashed -- then finally reliability monitor. Could anyone help make sense of what the descriptions mean?

Attached is also DxDiag

and a last Exception file -- I think this was when the game had no mods/cc in (may have had MCCC installed)

If anyone could help shed light on this would be amazing...thanks so much in advance.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was bc of my PC bc I've had it suddenly crash another game recently...

  • hyojinchu  Thanks for the dxdiag, which shows your graphics driver is crashing repeatedly.  The driver is from 2021, so you can probably just update it to fix the problem.  Go here:

    https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/

Select GeForce, RTX 30 series, RTX 3060, Windows 11, and download the Game Ready Driver.  Run the installer as an admin: right-click the download and select "Run as administrator."  Choose the Custom (not Express) install method, and check the box to perform a clean install.  Restart afterwards and before trying to play.

If this doesn't help, please try disabling XMP and CPU Turbo Boost, both in BIOS.  The latter may be hidden deep within advanced settings; the former should be easy to spot.  Some players with high-end Intel processors like yours have needed to disable one or both settings to get Sims 4 to stop crashing.

Some of them have also reported that a BIOS update fixed the problem, so you can look for one that mentions stability improvements.  Not all motherboard BIOS have been updated yet though, so don't be surprised if you don't find one.  You can of course update the BIOS anyway and hope for the best; I'm just saying it's not a guaranteed fix.

Hi! thank you so much for this -- I wanted to test out and see if all was clear and it seems like it's finally fixed now!!

So updating the driver did not solve the problem (though being up to date must be good!); disabling Turbo Boost in BIOS did. I just did Turbo Boost bc that was a solution I also saw elsewhere, but should I do both?

  • can't get the last exception file to load but it's very long... so I'll load it if it's needed

  • hyojinchu  If disabling Turbo Boost fixed the issue, you don't need to do anything else, except I guess watch for updates for your motherboard's BIOS so you can go back to enjoying the full power of your CPU.

I always recommend disabling XMP too because a couple players needed to do so, but it's not entirely clear whether that's part of this exact issue or a separate problem with instability at high RAM speeds.  (That problem definitely exists; I'm saying it's not clear whether the Sims 4 players who had to disable XMP had both the CPU turbo issue and the RAM instability issue, or XMP was contributing to their CPU turbo issue.  Things have gotten messy lately.)

The lastexception would be useful here if the problem were contained to one save, or even a single household, but not when the game crashes no matter which save you're playing.  LEs show details about what the game was trying and failing to load at the time; they have no insight into crashes that happen because of a problem at the system level.

  • I'm having the same problem. I noticed it always happens when I'm leaving CAS, but it happens in live mode too. No mods, clean folder, game repaired, drivers updated... It's driving me nuts, I'd appreciate any help.

  • b-antuness  Please provide a dxdiag.  Hit Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.
