Help?

Hi,I’m encountering an issue where my Sims 4 game refuses to open after the latest update. I’ve followed all the usual troubleshooting steps, including:

  • Restarting the game and my computer.
  • Verifying the game files.
  • Deleting cache files.
  • Disabling mods and custom content.
  • Updating my graphics drivers.
  • Running the game as an administrator.

Despite these efforts, the game continues to fail to launch. I’d appreciate any further assistance or guidance on resolving this issue. Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Thank you for your help!

Hello everyone! Disabling mods didn't work but fully removing my mods folder has worked! Thank you so much for your help!

  • xingbell  Your computer is definitely capable of handling everything Sims 4 throws at it in theory, but your dxdiag lists a serious crash of the graphics driver, or one of them (and a pile of other errors that look like you were trying to debug the issue yourself).  So please do a clean uninstall and reinstall of both drivers, as described here:

    https://crinrict.com/blog/2019/02/clean-re-install-of-graphics-drivers-with-display-driver-uninstaller-ddu.html

Use the drivers provided by Dell for your laptop, which I believe is this one:

    https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/alienware-m16-r1-laptop/drivers

But you can double-check by clicking This Device on the site and entering your service tag.  Point is, download both graphics drivers so you can install them manually, while your computer is still offline, after removing the current ones.

The proper order of operations here is remove the Nvidia driver > remove the Intel driver > restart > reinstall the Intel driver > restart > reinstall the Nvidia driver > restart, all while offline.

If this doesn't help, please post a new dxdiag.

estterr  Please test with no mods or custom content, as in, remove the Mods folder and delete localthumbcache.package.  If that doesn't help, please provide a dxdiag, as described above.

You may be seeing the build in disabled video card and not the Nvidia. I did try a clean install of the driver and still no go. This is the only game that gives me trouble. The problem appears to be with Sims. Either I will wait for EA to fix (hahahahaha) or the Modding community to figure it out.

It seems that EA is more interesting in selling more packs than fixing the game.

  • xingbell  The iGPU was definitely not disabled when you ran the dxdiag.  It's true that this kind of error (LiveKernelEvent 193) doesn't specify which driver crashed, but that's simply a limitation of dxdiags in general.  You could find out which driver it is by analyzing the crash dump, of course.  However, for someone who hasn't already figured out how to do that, it's easier to clean-uninstall and reinstall the graphics driver, or both drivers if you want to go that route.

If you would like to, the proper order of operations is remove the Nvidia driver (yes, even though you did already), remove the Intel driver, restart, reinstall the Intel driver, restart, reinstall the Nvidia driver, restart, all while your computer is offline.

This isn't an issue with Sims 4 in general, or there would be a lot more reports.  I have seen an increase in graphics driver-related errors lately, but not more than the usual increase with the release of a new expansion, when many players come back to the game after a break.

And to be clear, this is the OS flagging a problem with the graphics driver, nothing internal to Sims 4.  The game can trigger the error but should never do so absent a system issue.

My only concern, going from over 30 years of support, is why is the only application impacted? All others run without error and I am not ripping my computer apart in a virtual sense to fix a problem that only exists with Sims 4.

That may mean the problem in unfixable and I dumped a lot of money into this app. Given EA's approach of give us more money, I plan to abandon this app and move on. Unless of course it is fixed.

  • xingbell  There are lots of reasons a system issue could affect only one application.  To name an obvious one, the game might use a specific version of a runtime (DirectX, .NET, VC++) that no other app uses, or that no other app uses in exactly the same way.  The problem could then be the runtime, or a resource (like the graphics driver) that uses that runtime, or part of Windows that interacts with that runtime.  It's difficult to diagnose without direct access to the system.

However, many errors are very clear even if the exact cause is not.  BlueScreens and LiveKernelEvents often fall into this category in that they describe a specific fault.  You don't need to know, for example, exactly why the graphics driver crashed to observe that it did, and you can start troubleshooting with the source of the problem narrowed down significantly.

Still, if you don't want to continue troubleshooting, that's entirely your choice.

As someone who has troubleshot BSODs and Kernels, I know enough of a pattern to see the general issue. The teams I worked with would ask "Why us?" and then fix the issue.

It is not that I don't want to stop troubleshooting, it has boiled down we are perfect you are at fault with EA. The best way to get them to acknowledge is problem is to not feed the coffers.
