Persistent Freezing and Crashing in Sims 4 - No Mods or CC

Hello

Ive been experiencing ongoing issues with my Sims 4 game that I believe may be caused by a bug. The game consistently freezes and crashes during gameplay. My Sims will sometimes be unable to enter their homes and remain stuck outside. When in Build Mode, especially while placing lots, the game slows down drastically freezes or loads the lot incorrectly houses will often appear disheveled or partially unloaded.

Initially I assumed the problem was related to outdated custom content or mods. I spent over a month testing using the 50 50 method and eventually narrowed it down to just one mod. However even with all mods and CC removed the game continued to crash.

Heres what I’ve already tried

Cleared all cache files

Repaired the game twice via the EA app

Created a completely new Sims 4 folder and started a fresh save as suggested by Discord support

Despite all of these steps, the game continues to crash and freeze. These issues have been occurring for several months now, and I’ve exhausted all troubleshooting steps I’m aware of. I strongly suspect there may be a bug or deeper issue within the game itself.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

  • Rjmontez  Either one is fine.  In this context, "portable" means you get a file you can extract and drag around without installing.  This is in contrast to an installed app, which generally needs to stay where it is (e.g. you can't simply move Sims 4's program files elsewhere and expect the game to keep working).  Either one will work here.

puzzlezaddict Hey! So I am on the Geforce site from the link you sent me. Should the (product series) be on the RTX 50 series(notebooks)? also being my laptop is a 4060 GPU am i going with the 5090 laptop GPU for the (Product option)? Just want to confirm I am downloading the correct one. Also, when clicking search March does not show up, it stops at April 30th

  • Rjmontez  You can choose 40-series (notebooks) and 4060, but it doesn't matter, all newer drivers are compatible with all Nvidia GPUs going back almost a decade.

When I first posted the recommendation, the driver from mid-March was still available, but because Nvidia has released a couple of updates since then, that driver has been pushed off the list.  That's fine though.  Try driver 576.88 instead, and if that doesn't work, 577.00.

puzzlezaddict Thanks again for all your help!

Just wanted to give a quick update: I’ve been playing the game over the past couple of days and left it running during longer sessions to thoroughly test it out. Unfortunately, I’m still facing performance issues.

The game continues to run slowly, both with and without mods/CC. Even in Build Mode on smaller lots, there’s noticeable lag and delay when placing or moving objects.

The Gallery is also still very slow to load. Searching for lots is a challenge since the pages either take ages to load or don’t load at all, making it hard to browse or place new content.

For reference, I did use the 577.00 NVIDIA driver as recommended.

Let me know if you’d like a new DxDiag or additional info from Reliability Monitor based on these recent sessions.

Thanks again for sticking with me through this!

  • Rjmontez  I don't think I need anything else from you right now, but I would be curious as to whether the computer appears to be overheating.  Do the fans seem to be running hotter than usual?  Does the laptop itself feel especially hot to the touch?

The Task Manager's Performance tab will list the GPU temperatures, although only roughly, so you can check there too.  Make sure you have NOT minimized the game, as that will cause your RTX 4060 to downclock and therefore cool off, perhaps rather quickly.  Just bring the TM window to the front and take a look.  Anything below 80º C is fine.

If you want to take a closer look, download hwinfo (it's free, and the portable version is fine), extract it, launch it, choose "sensors only," and leave it open while you play.  You can alt-tab to it to take a look at CPU and GPU temps as well as a giant pile of other readings that you can ignore for now.  Excessively high readings will show in red, but I'd want to know if any CPU core gets hotter than the low 90s.

If everything looks fine on that front, this issue might be just a manifestation of how Sims 4 is running these days for some users on higher-end machines.  I tend to think that at least some of these complaints are due to user-side issues that are fixable, so I didn't want to brush you off with a gesture in the general direction of game optimization issues, but I do want to acknowledge that this may not be your computer's fault, so to speak.  Or the crashing could have been a system issue that you've now addressed, but the bad performance is due to the game itself.  It's often difficult to tell, especially when problems overlap.

Having said that, if your internal temps are fine and you want to at least try to fix the performance problems, I had suggestions for another user on a high-end system here:

Camera movements very choppy since BH patch | EA Forums - 12185589

Your computer can in theory handle the higher load without a problem.  But if it's already close to overheating, please don't make any of these changes, as they do increase the demands on your GPU, and on your CPU to a lesser extent.

If you get another crash, not just bad performance, I would definitely like to see the Reliability Monitor information.  But if the crash is in Innisgreen, that is also probably the fault of the game.
