The Sims 4 – Black Screen Issue with AMD Radeon 6700 XT and Latest Drivers

Hello EA Support,

I am experiencing a persistent issue with The Sims 4 on my system and would appreciate your assistance.

  • Operating System: Windows 11 Pro for Workstations
  • Graphics Card: AMD Radeon 6700 XT

Issue Details:

  • When using the latest AMD graphics driver (Adrenalin 25.6.1), The Sims 4 frequently causes my monitor to go black every few seconds, with the screen remaining black for extended periods.
  • The game only runs reliably with the older Adrenalin 24.12.1 driver.
  • I require the latest driver for other games (such as Return to Moria), so I am forced to constantly uninstall and reinstall different driver versions depending on which game I want to play.

Questions:

  • Will The Sims 4 be updated to ensure compatibility with recent AMD drivers?
  • Is there a known workaround, or is a patch planned to resolve this issue?

Thank you very much for your assistance.

If you’d like to add any more system details or attachments (like a DxDiag report), just let me know!

  • Loswen  A dxdiag would be great, as would any relevant error report from the Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer.  I haven't seen other reports of this that have been confirmed to be driver-related, although many users never come back after their initial post.

Have you tried version 25.6.1 yet?  It was released June 5 and is WHQL; there's also an optional 25.6.2 version that you could try.  I will say that if the newer version works with Sims 4, I doubt anyone would even look into the problem with 25.5.1, but if the newer drivers are also affected, that would be more concerning.  And to be clear, I don't work for EA, but I do see what generally piques the attention of the team.

  • Loswen  Your dxdiag is full of timeouts of the graphics driver, which is not a surprise given what you've reported.  I haven't seen any other reports of this issue on this driver since you posted though, so I'm not at all convinced it's the driver itself.

Does it help to disable the iGPU in BIOS?  You shouldn't need to in theory, but in practice, it's worth trying just in case the two drivers aren't playing well together.  The Intel driver is from 2022 and might not be compatible with something so new.

I would also try a clean uninstall of the AMD driver, with Display Driver Uninstaller, if you haven't already.  This is more thorough than the usual uninstall process.  Here's how to do it:

If none of this helps, I don't know what else to say, except hopefully the next AMD driver, or the next Sims 4 update, will fix the problem.  In the interim, you could install the older driver, then the newer one without doing a clean install, and use the Rollback option in Device Manager to revert to the older driver when you're ready to play Sims 4.  That should be faster than manually uninstalling the newer driver.
